Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
After a good week and a fun Wednesday night I'm looking for some more of that recreation kinda thing.
Good vibes reverberate and I'm still feeling it.
Tonight you can see Pamela Betti with Dirty Love at the Brickhouse
Brewery. I wish I could get out tonight I'd be there for that one.
I checked the other local headliners and found only a few are booked this weekend. Dig
Daddy is at Tailgaters in Patchogue which is a fun show.
There is Tragic Magic (young but pretty good) at Da Funky
Phish and not a lot else...at least that I can comment on.
Saturday there is Donnie Celenza at the Dirty Martini
in Ronkonkoma. He's a really good guitar (and piano) player. Thats a good show.
I'm all ear for anythng else going on so let me know if I'm missing something. I mentioned earlier
that Suzi Smith is at the Botany Festival in Clifton, NJ. That is Oct 1
I believe. Check out the link to Suzi's site on the musicians page. Details are there.
First of all the boys in Blue Matter are in top form these
days. Arty Panico, Ray Wade, George Ellert and Ralphie Santiago have been
kicking some glutious for some time now and its getting serious lately. Last night Suzi Smith was
in the mix (among others...including a nice trumpet player and some good keyboards)and it was a really fun and entertaining
night. Special mention of Kelly who added some vivacious visuals to the festivities and to my friend
Teresa (T bone) who adds good company. We had lots of laughs (amazing what a camera can add
to the party) and I got my recreation in many forms.
I heard that Suzi Smith (Sweet SuziQ) will be performing at The
Botany Festival in Clifton, NJ on Oct 1. There are a number of good acts at that affair
and it sounds like a fun day.Go check out Suzi...make it a field trip.
Tonight Kerry Kearney is at Paula Jeans Supperclub.
Thats a rare thing for a Thursday. You gotta see KK get down with some blues.
I'll be back later with some more stuff for the weekend. Thanks for stopping by and thanks, Lefty's and Blue Matter for a fun Wednesday night!!
Sometimes the better the weekend the more painful the Monday.
In this case it was both good music and some overindulgence to top it off.
Saturday was some good funkin music. The only gig I could get to was the O'Zone
gig at Lefty's and the boys of funk did some jammin. They have a new guitarman and he has
some blues in him. I'll get some names for these guys for the next gig.
It was a decent crowd, some friendly faces (good to see Suzi Smith however briefly) and a little
too much of my green olive blues. Ouch. Lefty's delivered a fun Saturday night for the locals once again though...I'm grateful
for some good stuff within range late on a Saturday night.
The festivals are always good but not always do-able for me. My little girl had her birthday
weekend and I could not miss time with the really good girl that I have. I am so very grateful for my child and I hope to
get to the next Long Island festival.
For the coming week...I heard that Kerry Kearney is playing Paula Jeans Supperclub this Thursday night (28th). Thats a great place especially
to see him.
Stay tuned for some stuff for the coming weekend...and thanks for stopping by.
Festival and non-festival. Check out something live this weekend.
First of all, I checked out a recording studio today. A pal I met at a local gig told me about his
Blokhed Studios in Deer Park. (Off Bay Shore Rd. on Skidmores) I had my own wood studio
in the neighborhood so I checked it out while I was back in the area. Tom, the owner, showed me
around. It turns out he is a blues fan and player and he is getting into hosting blues (and other) jams at his studio starting
this weekend. He is always looking for top notch blues artists for the jam sessions and he is open to all for a place to rehearse
and record. The place is a cool room. It has atmosphere and a good set-up for music. He also mentioned that he is looking
for a skilled "Hammond" player now for some blues tracks I think. There is a link here on my Additional links
page to his site. I look forward to going just to listen to some jams. Tell Tom Billfoolery sent you.
As for the weekend of course there is the Cedar Beach Festival in Mt. Sinai.
There is link right next to the post here. Click it. Most of the good local blues artists will be there. Kerry
Kearney, Pamela Betti, Sweet Suzi , many others. GO! Support
some really good local performers and have magical blues moments.
Locally I see there is a blues listing for Mr Beery's for Friday night. White
Hot and Blue. Sounds like a good bet.
Saturday there is O'Zone at Lefty's. Thats a fun funk
show. These guys are funk professionals and make some fun music. Our blues Princess Pam Betti will
also be Buchmanns Radio Grill in Smithtown on Sat night and Mr. KK (Kearney) will be at Maples in Manorville on Sat. night.
These two are busy and, no coincidence, worth seeing. I'll be back with anything else I find for the weekend. Thanks for stopping
by.
Yes, by "foggy" I mean the memory is a bit vague at this moment.
The boys, "Blue Matter" played an excellent, long night
of some really(really) good stuff. They got me with Red House and never let go.
That is a nice group of patrons down at Lefty's as well. I always meet
friendly faces, like Bernadette(see you next time?). I also met Dawn (of Naked Body Guitars, Link
just added on Additional Links page) and had a lot of nerdy chit chat about building guitars and stuff with wood. Arty
Panico of Blue Matter is also a builder of guitars and he makes the bodies and all by hand.
An excellent night all around. I recommend it for all you latenight music prowlers like myself.
I'll be back later with some more stuff for the weekend.
Well, It's Monday. Back to work music (and baseball) fans. I don't know about you but I need music
and other thought and emotion evoking things to get me through the weeks. It has been tough here. I know. We all have challenges.
I am just here sharing the fact that we have to deal with them. You have a sympathetic ear in me. In fact I'm here to help.
I try to offer music for those that like blues and genre's of the like to soothe aching hearts. It actually gives me peace
to hear songs like the ones I play here and to just listen. It is a gift you have, those who make it, and I'm grateful. I
try to bring it to the few who stumble here while clicking away on the computer for whatever reason. The live stuff is even
better. CHECK IT OUT!
I welcome feedback and information that helps me do this. I put the message function back on
the POST page for anyone wishing to comment. Feel free.
Quickly, next weekend is the Festival in Mt Sinai. See the link next to the
post here. Also next Saturday, at Lefty's, is O'Zone. A funk band. A
tight one. For anyone not heading to the festival thats a fun show.
I'll be back, of course with whatever else I find. Have a wondeful week.
We have sun. And just in time. Last nights downpour almost put me over the edge. I was finally able
to run out for some "musical therapy" and it was freaking pouring. I stayed fairly local and was bummed to find out that the
local gig had cancelled. I hate it when that happens.
Luckily there were two bands on the slate at Da Fish last night and there
was something "live" to indulge in.
The Lou Saxon Jam Band was on hand to save the day. I had heard the name
but never caught the show. They were more than adequate, in fact I enjoyed the music. It was not a blues show but I enjoy
some rock and other standards and I enjoy good performers. I actually ran into good friends (nice to be with you all
again) and ended up focusing on the chit chat. I forget the songs The Saxon (five?) were playing. That happens to my memory
sometimes. Hmm.
After they packed up we worked the jukebox and fed our heads as we caught up with some good friend stuff.
I did leave satiated and re-created so it was a good night. Thanks again Craig.
The process of digitizing music is as time consuming as any other aspect of
keeping an online journal. I try to keep the tunes new and interesting but it will be a challenge until I get more stuff
into mp3 format. Feel free to submit stuff to me (mp3) via e-mail and I'll be happy to check it out.
As for this weekend...
Friday you can catch Pamela
Betti with Dirty Love at Rock-a Fellas in E Northport. (Larkfield Rd). More info is on the
Pamela Betti site. Da Funky Phish has Dawnette D and Signify.
That's a nifty little show at Craigs crib.
My friends, Blue Matter, are playing at the old Pats
Place (now called something else) in Lindenhurst on Saturday night. That is
on Wellwood Ave. just north of the tracks, east side. Blue Matter play really good guitar blues
and rock. They are a tight group... thats a good show. And at Chesterfields you can catch
the one, the only, Kerry Kearney. If you enjoy guitar blues you have to check out
Mr KK one of these days. I just heard there's a good classic rock/blues band at Lefty's. Bluestone. That's always a place to check out for a decent
band and a nice crowd. Thanks for stopping by.
This just in...A local gal and jazzy, groovy singer Giovanni Van Essen
is doing a "little duet thing" at Tula Kitchen in Bay Shore (3rd and Main) this Thursday evening.
8ish. The place is a new, very stylish, healthy and delicious ristorante. (Try the pan-seared tuna). The singer who
has a link here on the Bands/Musicians page is a beauty of a singer and a real kind soul. Gio also has a CD coming out soon.
She will be fun to check out.
Thursday comes right after Wednesday this week. Wednesday is a fine night to look for blues. I know
about the excellent jams at Lefty's and Buchmann's Grille
and Reflections in Rockville Center. If they are off on any particular Wed. night someone let me
know and if there are any more I should know about please let me know that too. I think Cadillac Moon
has theirs in Lindenhurst on Wednesday also (Venetian Hut) but it is an earlier thing. I don't
get out until after 10:30.
One can never plan what will happen on a weekend when there are kids and family involved. Obvious
I know. I had planned on getting to the Festival Saturday and it never happened.
Luckily I got to Blue Parrot Friday night and caught Pamela
Betti and Dirty Love. I even got one of their CD's. I look forward to playing music of local
people here on the website. I am working on getting more. There is lot's of good stuff.
Saturday night I finally got out but it was too late to travel and my car had some issues that kept
me from going too far also...
I got to the Milk and Sugar Cafe in Bay Shore to see the end of a jazz
trio with Poppa G (Glen Palermo) on bass. (a pretty regular Sat night thing). It was a quiet
but good little event and a nice cafe. I then tried the Grand Opening party at Lefty's
and there was some decent rock-n-roll. The Ammunition I believe. I didn't stay long. It
was a good scene but I was looking for something bluesy and I had just enough time to get to Da Funky Phish (close to home) to see/hear Banooba.
They are a good young, creative group. I can only describe them as "alternative" with some rock, punk, blues and theatric
flare mixed in. I enjoyed the show. Craig R always gets good young talent there and some of the regulars (Blind
Robbery) are getting good. I also got a shocking surprise at, like, 2am, when Beverly D walked in with Ashley.
Anyone who knws Da Fish has to know Beverly and she moved to AZ less
than a year ago. It was great to see her. She'll be guest-bartending on Friday with Ashley by the way.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by. I'll find some stuff for the week ahead.
It is a big weekend not only because of the American Music Festival in
Port Jeff on Saturday and Sunday but because the good Long Island blues groups and artists are accessible at many other places.
There is no way to miss these acts if you care to check them out. For instance Ms. Pamela Betti
will be one raspy singer by the end of the weekend with all her gigs.
She is leading the Bluebloods at South St Seaport in NYC on Friday
evening and then out to Blue Parrot in Massapequa around 10 or so with DirtyLove. As for Saturday she is also with Dirty Love at the American
Music Festival at 5pm and then out to Chesterfields at night. Man...or should I say, Woman!
Kerry Kearney is listed for 10 at the Music Festival
on Saturday and he has the Blues Cruise. There are some cool acts at the festival. The list can be found at the link by clicking
the big white letters next to this post.
I have to mention a few other favorites. Lefty's, is having a GrandOpening Bash on Saturday. The place has recently been re-invented and is a
dynamite place. It will be supporting the local music scene by hosting shows and offering a really nice place to enjoy music.
For anyone situated on the south shore Saturday night check out the big night at Lefty's.
Also, Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers are rockin at Paula
Jeans Supperclub on Saturday night. So much good stuff this weekend...
I am elevated to prayer after a painful weekend of unrequited musical longing.
This is to suggest, and hence make happen, a bountiful week of fullfilling music.
It's not like there aren't any opportunities. There is the American Music Festival
this weekend in Port Jeff and there is a nice line-up there.
Before I get to the particulars with the now familiar names of my favorite artists let me remind anyone
out there that there is a Blues Cruise with the Kerry
Kearney Band on the 9th after he gives a show at the festival. I may be able to make myself available for that...things
still need to be ironed out but it could be fun.
Music, people, a boat on the water on a summer night, probably alcohol, and...ahem, who knows
what other offerings the spirits will grant in light of such favorable conditions. All I know is I could use a musical experience
of theraputic proportions.
In the meantime I'll be out on Wednesday night scrounging for local entertainment and all that stuff.
Last night may have been the slowest weekend night for music I have ever seen.
Some buddies and I started at Lefty's at around midnight and ther reggae
thing was long over. It was dead. We decided to try Blue Parrot. That usually has a decent house
band and some friendly faces working the bar. No good there either. There was no band and a stranger (yet cute) behind
the bar. It was late.It was raining and the only show I knew that was fun for me was SamTaylor
at Paula Jeans. Sorry but even I was not going to truck up there at that hour and it was probably
over anyway.
We stayed there, pumped some money in the jukebox and had a nightmare of music to listen to from
the people before us who must have put, like $50 in there. We were in an 80's pop music nightmare and there was no way to
escape. We ended up staying until after 2:30 and never heard one of the songs we picked.
I am now twisted and in great need of some musical release.
Luckily there is an option or two. I heard there is a blues Bar-B-Que at Signal
8 Saloon in Copaigue(Montauk Hwy) with Sweet Suzie Smith. Killer Joe
is also playing(after 6pm). It seems there is also a pig roast. Yum. If there is any way I can escape my home I'll be checking
that out. I'll be looking around for some stuff for later tonight too. Being that tomorrow is a Holiday there may be some
treats to hear.
Thanks for stopping by and please let me know if you hear of anything interesting for tonight...or any other night!!
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
