Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
Not dressed up and so many places to go... for halloween.
Where did that excitement go about dressing up and going to party's with sangria punch and costumes and
spider webs? Truthfully it seems like lifetimes ago when that was a thrill. I think it is more a statement about my last
decade... or two than indicative of my age or place. Don't worry, I'm not going there right now. I'm in more an informative
than reflective mood.
I finally did make it to a nice little Halloween gathering late on Saturday night but on the way I
only got to one show and I had such loftier ideas.
It was a Saturday night and I was able to get out by 10. Since I was heading to a party nearby I decided to catch
Blue Roots, my new friends, at Bobbique's.
The place had a nice crowd. Maybe I should get there earlier more often. The Blue Roots, it turns out, have
been around a while. I read in their history that the genesis of the core group was back in 1985. Yikes. I will
say that there was a comfort level among the core guys and they had some smooth channels on their dial. Vocals were cool as
were guitars (Steve Mantegna and Carlos DeJesus) and on the harp Scott Micciche did a fine job. Tru Doty on keys had
some nice spots and Bassi on bass made it all good. There were a few guest appearances by Ms. Jackie on vocals and she
added a few tasty moments. It was a good set I heard and I only heard one set.
Time came to move on and my Saturday night blues experience had come and gone. Once again Patchogue turned
out to be a good choice. There are other good locations of course and next week I'll try to report something different either
a place or a band.
Thanks for checking in. I plan to try and circulate some calenders in printed form. Keep an eye out or I
might try to display a print friendly calender here on the site. I find it useful to have a copy of my calender with me so
I can plan on the fly or offer advice for anyone who asks. I forget what I posted only a few days before. Know how that feels?
Oy!
One meets many people when one goes out often and this one tries hard to do that. I heard
a saying a few times in my life "if you stand in one place long enough the whole world will pass by". I "stand" at pretty
much one place on Wed. nights lately. I'm enjoying the procession.
My weekly weeknight out has been at Lefty's in Lindenhurst and it has been noted here often
that the place a constant source of comfort. Every week there are nice new additions. It is a joy to walk in every week
and see new stuff. This week there were more awnings over the outside seats and there were more outside seats. I
see they are serious about keeping up the outside experience for as much of the winter as possible.
Anyway, last nights jam brought another round of fun people. There were an abundance of bass players including
Tim Ididn'tgetthelastname; Paul from Blue Roots; Rich, last weeks newbie and even Popa G who is still nursing an injured
shoulder.
There was the Blue Roots engaging new vocalist, Jackie who treated us to a few tunes.
Josh Allen put together some inspiring licks on 6-string. The Blue Matter boys jammed brightly and...so much more. It was,
and has been, some fun jamming there on Wed. nights and the people are always fun to get to know.
The wrath of time and indulgence (the 80's, yikes!) is being felt lately though. Just a day or two ago I
posted the weekly calender here and when Paul of Blue Roots mentioned his band I knew it sounded familiar (all at once, DUH!)
but I was only vaguely sure that I had posted a gig of theirs lately. They have one at Bobbique's this Saturday and
I have been posting their stuff pretty regularly. Maybe the name sounded like another and I just got confused. Yeah, thats
it! I was confused.
Check out Blue Roots when you can. They have some talented pieces. Paul (bass), Tru Doty on keyboards and
Jackie (vocals) and more. They got down with some blues.
There are quite a few really good jams out there these days. There is rarely a night without something
good. That is both inspiring and frustrating. Without frustration I would have little to write about though...so rejoice!
Do your bitching and enjoy, like I do...and have fun this weekend.
If you have any heaviness in your heart and if you have a couple of minutes to sit down and listen to some
music I suggest you do it now. The Hendrix song I just posted, Once I Had a Woman, is the most soulful and articulate blues
guitar I have ever heard. It is what introduced me to the genre of blues guitar and it is never covered and rarely played
by DJ's.
I assume that there are other people with some loss and pain that enjoy exorcising these emotions. There
are apparently lots of people that choose not to because if everyone that suffered a downer listened to blues it would
be the most popular genre. Many, if not most, choose to listen to joyful noise. That's not a bad choice. I just wonder what
they do with the repressed emotions. I know some people have outlets other than music.
I can't help it. I found listening to music (and sharing my experiences) an expression for
my emotions. I can't escape it so why ignore it. Why not give it a voice, as musicians do, and make it beautiful and share
it. Any shared emotion brings people together. It is not re-living experiences. It is more like realizing life and
what it means. Experiencing all the emotions we feel is seeing life as a whole and if we choose to cut out parts of our emotions
we are choosing to cut out parts of life.
This may seem overly grand but in this country we choose to see only the beauty, wealth, joy, and productive
aspects of life. I feel a need to justify the blues and the "non-productive" idea of stopping and feeling a moment.
Any ideas that seem "counter productive" are minimized and scorned. The values of wealth and forward progress
are healthy for a society but incomplete for a person. In their determination people get caught up in looking through
the windshield and miss the views in the side and rear windows, not to mention inside the vehicle.
I am just suggesting that you stop and listen to Mr. Hendrix. It is a rarely articulate
expression. Don't just smell the roses, hear the music and do it often.
Nachos, a Crab House and a few vodkas...on a Sat. night.
I had seen Steve Interrante and most of his Nacho Mama players before but not as Nacho Mama. The cast this
past Saturday night was good. Interrrante on sax, JD Leonard on vocals and guitar, Tru Doty on keys, Tim Smith on bass and
last, but not least, Bobby Rondinelli on drums. They rocked!
The set was cut short a bit by some local pain-in the ass who must have had radar ears and complained. The
last few tunes were a bit hasty and formulatic (probably a result of the pending early finish) but the early stuff was kick-ass
and the nice, over 30 crowd was loving it. The brass and rock make for a funky sounding upbeat jam and the solo's were all
amazing.
Harbor Crab in Patchogue was a nice setting. The outdoor area is spacious with nice tables and heaters
on a large deck and a dock laden with beautiful boats made for a nice walk on a beautiful night. The bar area sits above and
is surrounded by a nice deck with overhang. The band was situated on the deck by the bar and was a spread thin along
a rail but it created an intimate experience with the attractive and celebratory audience. It was a fun scene until the
hasty end approached.
Catch a show of theirs soon....and thanks for checking in.
...and quite a few choices for us performance junkies.
One of the main attractions for me in my pursuit of blues and music is personal expression. I enjoy
the moments when musicians are locked in on the expression of a poignant lyric or lick. I enjoy taking the journey
with them through the pain, joy or anger of the moment.
When the expression is instrumental it is a different reward. I am not confined by pictures drawn with
words or particulars but rather I can let the music tell me about the feeling. Well played music, even for a few
moments, can be emotionally satisfying. The player has more control over me. I don't know where the player is with the song.
It is more her/his secret but when it is driving the player I am more the puppet...as opposed to vocals when I know better
where it is going and what the motivation may be.
A vocalist has a different tool. A vocalist can talk and say exactly what they want (without anyone
talking back). Their song is their own expression even if the words are not their own... the song is. It is a moment to say
what it is the song is saying...in their own voice in their own experience. Sometimes I follow every word believing I can
coax the singer or at least travel with them toward more emotion, toward a farther point or expression, toward laughter or
crying or a realization. I find more of these emotional stories in blues. I find more soul in blues but I find it in
rock and jazz too.
I never know where I may find it. That is why I go out as often as I can and listen to as many players as
I can...to hear more, feel more and share more.
Another Saturday night and whether I am alone or not I get to go out and be with someone, musically speaking.
I haven't caught the always entertaining Franny Mae in a little while. She likes those vineyard
gigs. Must be the wine.
Well, another Wednesday night and, as usual, I enjoyed hanging out at Lefty's Candlelight Bar and Grill
for the Blue Matter open mike jam.
Of course I would have liked to be at The Beacon last night for the Jimi Hendrix Tribute. I was not alone
thinking about that show. Josh Allen of Jacks O Diamonds, who was jamming, mentioned it too and, as a matter of fact,
we got a good number of Hendrix tunes last night. A little tribute of our own... of sorts.
Speaking of last night at the jam, Arty (the Professor)Panico of Blue Matter was in rare form. He even
impressed himself mentioning that he was standing while playing a number of times and that doesn't always happen. He was in
a zone and he is good when he's not in his zone. He is zone-indifferent to me...always an interesting guitar.
Blue Matter has a new bass player by the way. Ms. Kelly has now officially moved on and she'll be missed.
Last night the boys introduced their new 4-string guy, Rich Carrano. What a surprise that Rich is a layed back, mellow kind
of guy, a good player too!. Those bass players often are the unassuming types...and the most colorful upon further inspection.
Interesting dynamic I am noticing of the pieces of bands. Certain instruments attract certain types. Am I right?
Also showing up last night was Derek Hensley for some drum work. Derek is a hard working dude and a capable
drummer. Always a welcome face. There were just enough people to keep it interesting and it was interesting. The music was
sharp.
It was a good Hendrix kind of night and thats all right.
There are some noteworthy shows this weekend. Of course there are lots of good performers around here but
now and then some different names pop up for the weekend.
This weekend Miles To Dayton is at The Brickhouse. They are a really talented band doing sort of country
blues folk kind of stuff. They are a real find at The Brickhouse.
I also noticed that Nacho Mama has a great cast @ Harbor Crab this weekend...if you find yourself in or
near Patchogue.
Pam Betti and Blue Ruin are going at it again. Thats a two scoop treat with plenty of whip cream and a cherry
on top.
Kerry Kearney has one at Bobbique's, The 70's Band is interesting @ Painters. C & B has one and they
are putting some new stuff out there I hear.
So much to see, so little time, so many obstacles. Let's see what I can make happen. Good luck with your
efforts and make sure you get out there for at least one show this weekend. Okay?!
It has been a long time since I felt compelled to post a "weekend update".
That tells me it has been a long time since I have seen two shows on a weekend.
Just goes to show you how important it is to make time for entertainment and the arts. Life gets so busy
we have less time for ourselves and that is not good. If we are going to be smiling, happy, tolerable people we need to re-create.
Often...especially when things get bad and when things go wrong.
Saturday night I missed Todd Wolfe at Port Jazz because I was stranded until much later than
the 8pm start. Todd Wolfe is a new fave of mine having seen him/them at The Great South Bay Festival over the summer and then
again at Bobbique's. He is a "real pro" guitar player with a creative sense of style and execution.
So with the late hour and some friends to consider I chose to catch Smoking Gun for pretty much a "Premier"
performance. They had an earlier start recently but the cast made some changes for the current installation which includes
Bill Marino on guitar, Bill T on vocals and guitar, Jeannie B on vocals, Rich Thiel on bass, Joe D on keys and Frank,
a solid drummer.
Smoking Gun played a lot of southern rock, Lynrd Skynrd for instance...and they did that stuff well. They
also took advantage of some fine vocals by Bill T and Jeannie B who got into some Susan Tedeshi. The guitar was manned
well by Bill Marino.
They were solid and put on a good show. Marino is entertaining and his playing comes off the page now
and then for some interesting riff raff.
The vocals were good and I imagine will only get better. All are talented players and hopefully will
keep creating and rocking with that southern drawl, fast guitar and good vocals.
Sunday was the fundraiser for the LIBS winners heading to Memphis. The show was at Bobbique's and began
around 2. I got there around 4 (and I was lucky to even get there. Kids soccer on Sundays and all).
I caught the end of Steve Robinson who is one of the LIBS winners heading to Memphis for the International
Blues competition. He does a nice country. bluegrass guitar thing with genuine sound and nice playing. His last tune, a kind
of country rock-n-roll thing, was pretty cool. I liked the combination of the clear picking of bluegrass with harmony of rock
together.
Sweet Suzi and The Blues Experience were next and she/Suzi is in really good form right now. All of
them are. Johnny Anderson's playing was right on. Pellegrino and Foschino kept it all going just fine.
Suzi expressed with the strongest emotion I have heard in her singing and it was not in the form of
volume. She is getting even better and I felt a lot from her on Sunday. She was great!
I have seen Frank Latorre a number of times as he has played with Pam Betti and he was at the festivals
over the summer. Sunday was the first time I have seen him with his King Bees.
I really liked his choices of music and instruments. He plays a really nice harmonica and didn't disappoint
with that but he also went with vocals on some real blues tunes. It was a gallant effort and nicely done. Not a lot of people
in these parts do the southern blues thing with vocals. I also look forward to more of that stuff.
I missed the JP Blues boys (also heading to Memphis) and I was bummed about that. I have seen
them before and they are impressive. I am sure they and all the winners will raise a few eyebrows down there.
Long Island sends a decent variety and quality down there each year and I am sure it will foster more of
each and generate a healthy respect for Long Island musical arts.
It was a fun weekend musically speaking. I heard some new stuff, I met some new people (so many Bill's,
Billy's and Billie's). I hope to hear from them all again!! I also hope to be able to do these weekend updates often.
In the meantime I will continue to converse about the one or two shows a week I get to and bitch about all the ones I do not.
The passing weeks bring all kinds of different moods and outcomes at any given place. In this case
I am referring to the jam at Lefty's in Lindenhurst on Wednesday nights. It never sucks at Lefty's. They can use that little
catch-phrase if they want, no charge.
The weekly open mike hosted by the Blue Matter band (Arty Panico, Ray Wade and Ralphie Santiago) has busy
nights and some slower nights. There is never "no one" there. There is rarely a packed house (on Wednesdays). Most times
it gets a pretty good group of players, patrons and beer pongers.
"Out back" at Lefty's one can engage in beer pong, drinking or singing around the campfire. There is smoking
out there too. Smoking has been banished to outer enviorns and this place has the best outer enviorns you may find.
The place gets so relaxed out back some people just make it a night and hang out and tell
stories around the campfires at the really cool tables with gas-burning rock piles in the middle...and cushion chairs.
It is nicer than my own back deck out there. Lefty's has become as nice a hang-out as an adult could imagine. Well, my imagination
gets nuts so that may be too strong a statement. Suffice to say it's a damn fine establishment with a good idea of how to let
people relax.
The music is what kept me coming back. I happen to be a fan of guitar, blues, rock and roll, vocalists,
and live performance in general. There are always good guitar players there beginning with the Blue Matter boys. The cast
of semi-regular visitors is good too. For instance the Wed. past Josh Allen of Jacks O Diamonds was up there
jamming with Johnny Cola (while Arty Panico was out in the back singing around the campfire apparently). Josh and Johnny had
some fun with Caledonia. They jamalama'd the heck right out of that one. That happens a lot there.
There are often some good singers there too. Sweet Suzi saunters in pretty often and sometimes belts one
out. Sweaty Betty pops in on occasion. Nicest sweat-er you've ever seen.
There are some locals that get up pretty often and squeak out a few. They all get better each time
they go up and it's fun to see them get up (after a few drinks) and hone their sounds.
There are usually some fun and attractive people there too...if you like fun and attractive people. I find
them fun and nice to look at.
I have lots of favorite places for local live music but Lefty's is always improving. Every week there has
been something new and improved. I suggest you go there some night soon. Hey, how about Wednesday night?! Just a suggestion.
A few people crazy enough to call themselves my friends and be seen with me in public, and I, decided
to catch up with Ms.Cherry Cherry Pam Pam and the Blue Ruin boys. It has been a while since I had the pleasure of either act
and both together is like candy and popcorn at the movies.
PB had all her energy if not all her chops. It seems bronchial maladies had a hold of her recently. She
still gets a lot of mileage out of that little frame of hers and last night she was working it. With sometimes full
force vocals you never get cheated at one of Pam Betti's shows. She sings her ass off. She was pretty proud of that glutious
of hers too. She turned around and gave us all a full butt slappin greeting at one point. That was touching...in a warm
trashy kind of way.
Blue Ruin ads a cool voice of their own. They can carry a show with Ross on guitar, Schlessenger
on keys and excellent bass and drums. The combination of them with PB is a helluva show.
I'm not sure if it is The Brickhouse Brewery or if PB & BR brought an attractive and enthusiastic crowd.
It was an enjoyable night on the ears and eyes. All my senses got twanged. Not bad for $5. The Brickhouse (and Bobbique's
music across the street) has become a fun weekend destination hosting quality shows and a nice enviornment.
On an eclectic note, I was lucky enough to come across some cool artwork. I am posting some art events for
your visual entertainment and some art pieces right here on my site. I welcome feedback about it (and everything else) and
if you are so inclined you may even purchase the artwork shown (when stated). If you have work you would like to show you
are welcome to run it by me too. Please let me know.
Amazing what a couple of cameras can do for a Wednesday night jam.
Artmuse Records, an outfit from the left coast, was at Lefty's Candlelight
Bar and Grill last night to record (video and audio) original stuff at an "open mike" jam.
I spoke to one of the principals, Julie Larsen, who is also a recording artist, and she said they searched
the web and found the Lefty's jam posted on a few sites. It was what they were looking for, an open mike.
The turnout was good. There were mostly the usual culprits from Wednesday nights at Lefty's, including Blue
Matter, Charlie Labs (who layed down a few cool tunes with his "Yellow Box" trio), Jim "Josie Wales" Coleman, Sweet
Suzi, who made her post-natal debut with some of her Blues Experience boys, Ralph Santiago called in Killer Joe &
The Lido Soul Revue who loosened a few ceiling tiles with a couple of raucous tunes, Tim Dorsey plugged in for a
few with O'Zone and that was just what I saw. There were a few acts before I got there. Chicken Martini was a real hit
I heard. I did not catch Voodoo Guru or Tom Ciorciari who played some acoustic guitar.
There were a few regular Wed. night jammers that were not there like Josh Allen (Jacks O Diamonds)
who would have been good for a few original tunes, Johnny Cola must have been busy too. He was missed. Popa G is another
familiar face that I didn't see. Too bad. I like his bass.
The Art Muse folks were looking for original stuff. There were a few but most of the performers did covers.
Sweet Suzi sang a beauty of an original that she said was given to her by Sam Taylor. There were a few other original
tunes in the mix but there could have been more. Charlie Labs, Yellow Box played original stuff. Killer Joe reworked one and
made it his own.
Obviously original's are harder to make. It is a terrific endeavor of Art Muse Records to travel the country
recording jams in pursuit of original music. I not only wish I could join them in their efforts but I think it is a great
idea not only for people who want to record music but for people who want to learn the craft and the industry. Field trip
anybody!!??
A few notes I gathered in conversation last night at the jam; Artmuse will be showing some of their vids
on MySpace and and a dvd will follow. I will keep you posted as I hear. Also, there is a new jam at The Olivium in Hicksville(?)
on Tuesday nights. It has a good cast. I got that from Bill Post, the drummer extrordinaire. I'll try to get more info about
that too.
Also, I was made privy to some 411 about the new CD coming out from Sweet Suzi & The Blues Experience.
I will have some of that here real soon. It is some great stuff!
What a great twist to the Wednesday night jam at Lefty's. I may get myself a camera and record some stuff
myself. It brings out the polish in everyone and a pretty good crowd too.
Thanks Lefty's, Artmuse Records and all the artists. Thanks for coming bye here too. Much appreciated!
I have mentioned in the past how much I hate the editorial political opinions of Rolling Stone Magazine
and I will not subscribe to the magazine as a minor protest. I also have stated here a few times how much I detest partisan
politics in general and I feel it is narrow minded and hypocritical.
For a magazine that has postured to be a voice for the rock-n-roll generation and therefor "anti-establishment"
how is it that their opinions have become as hard-bolied and inelastic as the other side. There are two parties, for the most
part, and if neither one can see the other side there will always be blindness. How does one side have any superiority
over the other side as far as seeing truth? Two of the last three issues of RS have lambasted the two leading Republican candidates.
Is that helpful? Is it going to be a parade of Republican bashing? Is there nothing anyone can gain from reading the political
articles in Rolling Stone other than Democrats are right and Republicans are wrong? I see flaws everywhere and only a few
good ideas and neither party has a monopoly on either. How about some originality!?!?
Having said all that I still pick up an issue on occasion and find many good articles in the non-political
arenas.
Specifically, the recent issue has an interesting piece about Hunter Thompson, the "gonzo" author of Fear
and Loathing in Las Vegas among other titles.
He fascinates me. The life style was out of control (okay, I relate to that) but there were moments
of clarity that were either products of his higher consiousness or in spite of it. He lived by his own set of beliefs and
he was pretty much off the tracks more often than not.
To be honest I am envious but also somewhat comfortable that I cannot have such a license being that I have
a child. I see the romance though. Every whim can be explored in any direction, every joy can be celebrated to extreme levels,
every moment can have entertainment, however synthetic, in the absence of an actual event. Every hangover can be overcome
with a medicated wave bringing on a new days landslide of inebriated calamity. It is where bad habits are a
profession and only the strong of heart can sustain.
A writers job is merely to hang on and try to remember the details and when he doesn't he can make
them up....all the more entertaining....and it is entertaining!
I guess I can admit that in a very watered down and suburban and non-acidic way I find myself trying
to be a bit "gonzo"; ie, disconnected from the conventional (and mundane hopefuly) in a "stream-of-thought" sort of way and
maybe even a bit, dare I say, out of control.
So when I come out of nowhere and get "poetic"or...whatever, just consider a Hunter Thompson or maybe
a Charles Bukowski (I flatter myself I know). I am just talking in terms of voice and how I hear myself. You may be hearing...
something entirely different but if you come back to my site I'm grateful for whatver it is. I wish I could hear
your thoughts and words. That's why I like performers. I get to hear them emote and when people emote we hear truth..the truth
about who they are and from that we see where we all fit in. We see ourselves.
I have been a bit challenged lately to get to as many shows as I would like so I come here and spill. Thanks
very much for getting this far. Y'all come back now, ya heah?
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
