Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
Nights out are rare lately. Oh the pain of sitting home knowing there are good shows, friendly faces and
fun to be had out there.
It doesn't help that shows cancel with no notice. People travel to distant places only to find bad lounge
scenes with people wearing turtle necks and bad hair pieces. Then the arrival at another place is late and crucial sets were
missed at prime times. It's criminal.
Perhaps I should call and check every listing. Nah, that would take all week and I barely have time to change
the song here on the blogsite. Speaking of which, I would love some new tunes from the locals. Any blues band or artist who
sends me an mp3 will get it aired here on my humble site and if you send me an "album's" worth I'll pay you for it. I pay
a buck a song on iTunes. I'll pay that locally too.
So I finally did get out last night and it was a bit late so I stayed close and checked out Smokin
Gun at Giacomo Jacks. I am liking the attitude at Giacomo's. It is a tough place to "watch" the band with the logistics but
the people are fun, the prices are right and they have good stuff.
Smokin Gun has gotten more comfortable in their skin. I sensed a more layed back attitude and the two-headed
vocals of Jeannie B and Bill Theis works for me. Theis handled more blues tunes than I remembered last time and I enjoyed
it. He has a strong voice. Jeannie B's sound has also mellowed a bit in the months since I have heard her/them. She had
some good moments Saturday night.
Bill Marino on guitar is still lighting up the blues tunes with his fancy fingers. Smokin Gun adds
more rock to the mix which is more upbeat. Rich Theil on bass has fun with that. I like the blues stuff though but thats no
secret. I thrive on the pain of it all. You got pain? Let me know where you're playing. I'll keep you company.
I will be back soon with some stuff for New Years Eve which I probably will not attend but I'll be happy
to do some looking fer ya. Come on back and I'll have some stuff.
Thanks for stopping by and do keep me posted on shows (and Cancellations!!). Thank you very much.
Santa came and he turned me on to some cool music. Los Lonely Boys (Live at The Fillmore). The Garza
brothers (3 players) are damn good. I hope you enjoy my selection today and I hope you enjoy your holiday.
In the holiday spirit...I am so grateful to all the local talented musicians, all the bar-owners who help
make it happen, all my friends who let me hang with them and those who don't (you're coolness is inspiring) and to my family
who (most of them) understand my need for it all.
PS. I could use some more 411 on some holiday gigs. Feel free to fill me in today and after today. (bill@billfoolery.com). And if there are any inspired musicians who want to play somewhere and are not booked as of now let's make it
happen. I'll help if I can. Thanks you-all!!!!!
So it is Christmas...eve. Where did the year go? Where did the week go? Where did the day go? I can't keep
track anymore.
I get up, put my feet on the floor and start walking and talkin. One thing after another, taking calls,
building stuff, thinking about and talking with my fam, eating, writing and conking out at the end of the day. The days fly
by and the memories build and they are the only evidence I have of the things I have done. Well sometimes I get splinters
and they remind me the next day too.
It is sort of precarious to rely on just that isn't it? For that reason (and some others that I don't
recall right now) I decided to live in the moment. The past is gone and the memories are just subjective and transient.
The future is so unsure and that's no guarantee.
This moment is all I have and I am glad to be here writing to you. This is one of the good moments in my
day. I wish I had more time to do this and to spend time in the creative endeavors and speaking freely.
If nothing else Christmas is a time to be thoughtful of why we are here and (for me) be grateful of
whatever we believe that reason is. Today christians celebrate the birth of Him. Amazing we count our time by his life. We
take his name in either vain or praise almost every day. We govern our states with his guidance. What a man, what a supernatural
man he was/is!
I do have some reservations about the doctrine and the "facts" as we read them today but one can not doubt
the influence of the man, Jesus, or doubt his philosophy as peaceful and wise.
It just so happens that I, like him, am a carpenter. (I wonder if his hands hurt at the end of the day too).
I, like Him, forgive and hopfeully like Him, do not judge. I, like Him, try to understand all and live for good
things other than money. That particular issue is a tough one though.
These things I do because they are, well, wise. I was taught about going to hell and heaven as a kid but
now I just think he was right.
I think it is good that other faith's celebrate this time of year. We all have beliefs to celebrate and
it is better that we all do it at the same time. The discussion is at the forefront and we might as well all take advantage
of the sale prices at the same time.
The issues of the new year bring about some more "heady" thoughts too but I have lots of stuff to do for
the holiday celebrations so I'll let it go here.
Please enjoy your holiday if you choose to have one and enjoy your families if they are close and thank
(or curse...whatever your case may be) whomever you feel is responsible for you being here.
I had no idea trying something different would result in so many noteworthy things.
Instead of patronizing my usual Wed. night open jam at Lefty's I decided to catch some new faces at some
new places. I heard that I missed some good players at Leffty's, by the way, but thats the chance one takes.
I wanted to try to catch Pam Betti and Jim Moran at Buchmann's Grille in Smithtown for their Wed. night
thing. I know Ms. Betti was at Big Daddy's in Massapequa earlier that night but I figured she might stop by Buchmann's afterwards.
It was the first time I was able to get out there on a Wed.. I heard Roxy Perry was performing but
that didn't mean PB couldn't be there too.
I also wanted to catch Todd Wolfe at The Brickhouse and Sam Taylor across the street at Bobbique's but
I got out so late I had to go for one show only.
Roxy Perry put on some nice sets. She is bluesy, soulful, funky, smooth. I really enjoyed her voice
and her "stylings". Her sound is rich with nuance, experience and emotion.
I heard the end of a song as I entered the room. I was distressed that I may have missed
her show. Luckily I got another set later on. It was real blues with a nice delivery. I want more! I'll
keep you posted on her local gigs. You can check her out at RoxyPerry.com.
It would have been too much to ask for Pam Betti too but I'll get back there again. I enjoyed the setting
and Jim Moran and Co. (Tim Smith, bass; Peter Antonio, keys; Ed "the Hat", drums) always put on some rich rock-n-roll blues.
Another special treat at Buchmann's Wed. night was The Hitman (Russell Alexander). Who knew it was going
to be such a full bill?
The Hitman is a busy man lately and he has a lot to say with his voice and guitar. His vocals were good,
uncanny at times taking on some classic rock. His guitar is good too and get this!! Russell "The Hitman" Alexander
is nominated for a Grammy (Best traditional Blues Album; Live at Stonybrook Cafe). I have one of Hitman's CD's; "Angel in
The Shadows" and it is good. I am amazed how much the man has written. He has more CD's that I haven't heard yet. He
hosts jams on Monday at Last Call in Farmingdale and Tuesday in E Meadow @ Dempsy's. He gets some good artists at the jams.
I was lucky to catch so much good stuff in one hit. I'll be back to Buchmann's to catch Jim Moran,
his boys and Pam Betti...and who knows who else. Thats the fun of open jams.
There's some good stuff this weekend. Check it out.
Enjoy the holiday, music fans, and thanks for checking in.
It is rare for so many options on a Wednesday night but IT IS the holiday season.
Typically I enjoy the open jam @ Lefty's on a Wednesday. It gets some good players and some good folks hanging
out.
This time I have waaay too many options. Todd Wolfe, a top notch guitar player is at The Brickhouse. He
isn't around that much and that's a great option. Sam Taylor is across the street at Bobbique's too which is a bonus.
I also just heard that Roxy Perry is performing with Jim Moran at the weekly JM @ Buchmann's. Usually
Pam Betti joins Jim Moran for that one but she happens to be at Big Daddy's in Massapequa tonight with Blue Ruin. (7pm). That's
another good one but I cannot get out early enough or I'd be more confused about where to go.
If you ever go out on a Wed. night this is the one to explore. So many options and all good.... just thought
I'd post the 411 for a rare exciting weeknight.
Don't the cool (frigid) blustery(noreaster) days remind you of the holiday and cheerful times
approaching?
Thank god for some good music and an occasional chance to get out and enjoy.
This weekend I had a few chances to go to shows which is a little bit rare... but this time it
was not on Saturday night.
Friday night I caught The Sly Geralds Band at Giacomo Jacks in Amityville. I have always had a problem
finding a comfortable place to sit and watch at Giacomo's (even though I like the vibe there) but this time I discovered a
table right behind the band with a great view to watch and hear every piece of the band. In this case it was Sly Geralds on
5-string base, brother Dave on guitar and Mike (?) on drums. They put together a good show of varying styles
including rock, some of it bluesy, some funk and R & B stuff. Geralds plays an upbeat bass and handles a lot of tunes
with instrument and vocals.
Brother Dave was a pleasent surprise on guitar with some really good riffs. The band put on a good show.
I'm glad I finally caught them and I suggest you do too.
Sunday I was busy around the house with holiday preparations and other assorted chores so I was lucky to
have a show right around the corner at The Brightwaters Inn.
Blue Matter Band played a benefit event for LI Families in Need (which is a cause I can relate to). The crowd
was not bad for a Sunday afternoon of bad weather in fact it was a nice crowd.
Blue Matter is Ray Wade on vocals and guitar, Arty Panico on guitar and Ralphie Santiago
on drums. Today they also had Charlie Labs on keys and a stand in bass player, Brian Duggan.
The BM boys put on a tight three sets of blues and rock and the crowd was appreciative. The sets were tight
and offered a jazzy blend of otherwise usual blues/rock fare. Arty Panico's guitar adds the jazzy element. Ray Wade
carries the vocals well and offers some nice guitar on the side. Labs on keys is solid with some juicy solo's and on
bass Duggan (more a 6 string guy I heard) did a solid job.
The show turned in some money for the cause too!! It was a nice day.
Brightwaters Inn is a smallish but comfortable size room, open to views all around with some nice
folks running the show.
Stay tuned for more events there... I expect.
Stay tuned here every week for a full schedule of good stuff in Nassau and Suffolk. I try to keep a complete
schedule of blues, blues/rock and other "over30" live stuff including some jazz, funk, folk, acoustic and even some art and
theater shows that sound interesting.
I try to keep life in the burbs somewhat interesting. I appreciate all the info I can get so thanks for
the information you send me and thanks for stopping by.
Benefits shows are everywhere this time of year. There are a few this weekend. The causes are many
and all good. One is for families in need. Some are toys for tots. Another is to help a local blues legend, Sam Taylor.
It's a nice idea...helping families that can't afford holiday gifts. It gets crazy trying to afford all
the presents, all the house trimmings, all the preparations. "...but for the grace of God there go I." Even with my
challenges of raising a child, working and trying to keep up with the Joneses, etc., I find it comforting to thank whomever
is above for what I do have; health, a lovely child and a nice home however modest.
One show (for LI Families in Need) is at The Brightwaters Inn, Sunday at 3:30 and another is at DJ
Riders, Sunday afternoon also. Check one out and support a good cause.
The benefit for Sam Taylor is a nice story too. The elder gentleman had a lengthy hospital stay during the
year and it was too much financially. He must be doing a lot right to generate such good will. It goes to show
you that a life of music/ blues/ art has value even in this monetary culture; even without making million$. People of
the local music community are moved to help Mr. Taylor. That show is Saturday night at The Vail Leavitt Music Hall. It's
a great show!!!
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the demands of society? No one wants to hear
about problems. It is almost incredible to hear that people at large are offering help to people in need for Christmas
and that so many people are so hard pressed.
It is important that there are places and institutions available for that. These organizations and charities
need to be supported.
Recently I was at a Sweet Suzi & the Blues Experience show and Suzi offered seasons greetings to the
patrons of the show and then offered peace and joy to "people less fortunate than ourselves". It just sounded like a cliche
at the time but in fact it was very thoughtful and indicative of people living a life of good intentions and sensitivity.
Supporting the benefit shows is important. Supporting the organizations that provide the help is import.
Supporting people in the arts is also very important. Thanks for listening.
Sometimes people are hard to figure out. Sometimes life is hard to figure out. The beautiful
peaceful process of living we read about and aspire to is hard to achieve.
Stuff happens, challenges arise, frustrations build and we just have to handle it. Whether there is someone
there to help or not and whether there is someone to understand or not doesn't change what we have to do. We have to solve
problems, move on and smile....and hopefully remain unscathed.
Somtimes I don't want to smile. Sometimes I don't want to even share anymore. I just want to get lost in
some music. I'd like that music to be saying something like what I feel. I'd like that artist or song or, God willing,
both to be echoing the sentiments of the challenges we face and escape from and get hit by and hurt from. Al those things
All things considered, and there was a lot to consider Saturday night, we ended up at Lefty's to see Sweet
Suzi & The Blues Experience. This time the experience was eclectic including some funk, jazz, country flavor
and even some punk.
The band had Popa G sitting in on bass for starters joining Suzi, Johnny Anderson and Tom Foschino. The
first set, half of which I missed (but I got the 411), was good and conventional and bluesy. As a segway between
sets up came Russell. "Hitman" Alexander who voiced his guitar quite well in the blues vernacular.
From then on Sweet Suzi and the boys got experimental. They opened it up with some wide
ranging guest spots after that starting with the jazzy Henning Stumm on drums, followed by funky Tim Dorsey on keys.
There was some conga as well by Bill Galante.
I'm glad I didn't leave my seat for very long because there were a number of other guests spots to follow
including Steve on harp who did a nice job and Rob Lepano who belted out a tune or two with vocals.
Guitarist Rich Lanahan of Fourteen Feet then layed down some licks in a folksy/country style that
sounded cool with some blues. I was ready to hear more of Mr.Lanahan when I heard that another guest guitar had
a spot waiting and up came Ms. "Bunny" of Cheap Perfume for a little number.
Well Bunny had her way with the amp apparently because all the sudden there was a new noise in the room
and she had the house's attention with some attitude rockin in the key of distortion. She threw some electric glitter
on everything and lit things up.
It was a giddy surprise and afterwards I tried to chat with her but she had all kinds of interference around
her in the way of hound dogs barking up her tree apparently. It was a little punk-city scene at Lefty's. Bunny was a
fun one!
There were a number of fun moments. You never know what will happen when you experiment with some good pieces
and last night for the most part it worked well.
All in all I was lucky to see two shows this weekend and I got some variety and some talent. Can't ask for
much more than that. I hope you fared well yourselves and stay tuned right here for next weeks schedule. There's lots of good
shows coming up for the holidays.
Da Funky Phish is, like, my backyard. It's so close. I keep tabs on the place even though it attracts a
younger crowd most of the time. Occasionally they host a Reckoning or a Scofflaws and occasionally I saunter in. They always
have young, attractive and engaging bartenders and some have been there a long time. If you haven't been there in a few years
you may still see a familiar face other than Craig, the affable and enigmatic funkmaster and pilot of the local mothership.
Last night I was able to get out but I wanted to keep it close and Reckoning was on tap at little funksville.
Charlie, lead guitar and vocals, has it down and they never fail to deliver on a good night of "Dead" and
other related rock n roll jam stuff. It was pretty much what I needed...a laid back episode of jam music and eye candy...
close to home and good for the general well being.
And when there is a break in the music Craig, Mr. Kingfish, can be entertaining. That's good and
bad. Last night he was flashing his torso which for some reason, and I don't want to know, was adorned with a man sized
bra. Yikes!!! He thought that was pretty funny, I almost fell off my chair. That's nightmare material!
As for the remainder of the weekend I am hopeful of getting out tonight. There is a full slate of quality
stuff out there.
Cadillac Moon happens to be entertaining. Leslie Zimei is a nice singer. She and her moon boys
make some upbeat blues and rock and put on a good show and they are with comedian Jackie Martling. That's a good one!
There's Robert Charels at Pub 454...a celebrated blues artist that does not play locally all the time.
There's Sweet Suzi and The Blues Experience with Popa G on bass tonight. There's Pam Betti and Jim Moran
Band. There's the Dare Ya Band at the Viking. Kerry Kearney is at The Maples. And there's more!!!
Damn...what's a guy to do? This will be a tough call. If you ever wanted to find some good local music tonight
is your night. No excuses. Now go out there and drag some friends with you. And enjoy!
Georgia Blues is another definitive blues tune for me by my professor, Mr. Hendrix. God rest his good soul.
So Christmas approaches and it is sometimes intimidating as all the expectations and the realities collide. Off
I go careening through December working continuously to pay for it all getting further and further behind in the preparations.
With the additional hours I also miss my child and my own recreation time as the chilly weeks pass and I take it a day at
a time...as they say. They do go bye in a blur.
Sorry for the blue holiday note but it's there and now it is shared and I will find some good notes to sing
in the coming weeks. My childs smiles are a fast cure...as is a good night of music and there are a lot coming up this weekend.
Before I go to the weekend I should mention my Wednesday night at the jam. There were the usual suspects,
Blue Matter with their guitar repertoire and some of the regular contributors like Jim "Josey Wales".
There was also Johnny Anderson of "Sweet Suzi & the Blues Experience" sitting in with his
guitar. JA's self proclaimed rusty hands were singing some joy for me last night. His rust is some happy stuff for me. Some
styles of play just amuse and his is one of those. Check out Johnny this weekend with Sweet Suzi & The Blues Experience.
Also gracing the Lefty's stage last night was bass extrordinaire, Popa G who lightened the gravity for a
few tunes and entertained the average size but enthusiastic crowd. That's a good jam and not just because good players show
up. It is also good because some less polished players get up and work on their stuff.
As for the weekend take your pick. There are so many good shows it will be hard to choose...assuming I get
to choose. Make it a point to get to a show this weekend and feel free to tell me all about it.
Another Sat. night and I had some good music for company.
One of the many benefits of taking in original music is that the names of the songs aren't supposed to be
obvious...as good as the music may be.
A by-product of my experiences from prior decades is a photographic memory. I remember "photographs"
just fine. It is the names and words that often slip through the cracks.
Breakaway, who played The Viking in Islip Saturday night, write and play their own music. That
gets lost in the discussion sometimes. There aren't many that do that well, locally.
"Howie, Lou, Dustin, Al, Evan and Joe" do their very own bluesy-rock stuff. I heard references to Beatles
and Allman Bros. among others but the tunes are their own. They rock! It is stuff worth hearing... with noteworthy
solo's by all and some good jam moments thrown in. It is a brand of blue-rock that "thinking", experienced listeners can enjoy...
at least partly because the songs are not over-done covers.
As a bonus on Saturday night we got some Franny-baby on vocals. It was a birthday celebration of the bands friend
Franny Mae and her sultry sound was a nice blend with the smooth "whisky" flavor of Breakaway. Also standing
in with Breakaway was T-Bone, Tommy who added some stylin guitar and some excellent sax was added by Adam Tese.
(of Dare Ya Band)
There were some excellent moments to ride along with and The Viking is always a great place to do that with
the amiable hosts Mike and Debbie who fill the bill with good stuff, always. What I like best about The Viking, besides their taste
in music, is that the shows start late, comparatively. The seats fill up late, usually, which gets me a decent place
to hang and they end late. Voila! (That's french for "cool"... I think).
So it's off to December. Winter is here and I'll be needing my blues...so keep me posted and I'll do the
same for you. Thanks for stopping by.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
