Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
The pain of difficult times can be managed with a few moments of happier emotions. In my case
that would be music and even better, live music.
This weekend I managed some healing thankyouverymuch.
It began with a Saturday night stop-over at The 50 Yardline Bar in W Babylon. I had enough time to pop in
for a quick listen to Chic n' Martini on the way out to John Judd at ET Quiggs in Bellmore.
I first heard Chic n' Martini at the Open Mic night a year or two ago at Lefty's. It's been a while
and I didn't get much of a listen back then.
Cn'M consists of Janet Leto and Michelle Gavilondo on vocals guitars and percussion; bass
player, Tony Montalbo I believe it was, also performed. I was informed that Ms. Gavilondo was feeling under the weather but
that was interesting news because the vocals were dynamite and the performances were tight and rehearsed. That makes sense
because they recently published a CD, Color This Moment, and I purchased one as I was hastily cutting out
mid-set.
Chic n' Martini have an engaging act with no-fooling-around type talent. It did not happen to
be blues but they were original and they appealed to my taste for more creative forms of rock. Their original stuff is
good. Their vocals are really good as two clear capable voices handled solo's well and harmony's beautifully. I
suggest you catch a show if they decide to get gigging more frequently around here.
I cut out fairly quickly there at The 50 Yardline so I could catch some John Judd and Co. at ET Quiggs.
That was a last minute find for me. JJ is always good and ET Quiggs is not all that far and very accessible via Wantagh
Pkwy.
The shows there have been good as the Thursday night jam has attracted many quality players. Judd was in the mood Saturday
night and he went at it for a good long blues hang out.
I often leave a bit frustrated if I love something I hear and I only catch one or two songs. When
I get three, four, five and more songs of a good blues mood I get giddy. A few times during conversations I stopped to
catch the guitar moment as it was passing by. Judd's guitar voice was penetrating, rich. That's the good stuff!
I truly had an enjoyable Saturday night. I heard someone new and good and I had blues fullfillment all in
the same night.
Sunday I figger'd I'd git me some mo with a little window of opportunity around 3 o'clock.
I headed out to Bobbique's for the big send-off event for Sweet Suzi and Motu. I arrived for the last two
songs by JP Blues (Holy Mackeral...that dude was bringing it!!). I have not heard Mr. JP in over a year and his fingers have
been busy. I heard so much more in the way of skill and confidence that I was blown away. It was encouraging to hear
him /them (awesome bass player and Pat Atkins on drums) and know there is so much to look forward to in these parts.
I caught some of the stylish Motu who even played with Kerry Kearney for a song or two. That was a flavorful
moment.
I had to apologize to Suzi who was going on last as I was not going to be able to hang around. I knew I
would get there but I had no idea how long and when. Her collaborations with Gary Sellers (and the SS Band) are enjoyable
stuff and it was a great bill of talent there on Sunday.
I needed a good weekend and I got it.
Thanks for the cool music and thanks for checking in here at Billfoolery.com. Remember to send me your gigs
if you would like to have them posted on my calendar. I don't have time or the luxury of a lot of ambitions here
other than sharing the benefits of living with music but I do try to have a useful calendar. I look for everything I can find
that might be interesting for over 30-types but I don't find everything. Sending them to me helps. Corrections are welcome
too.
So there's a full slate for the coming weekend. I hope you have lots of time for some entertainment. It's
an off weekend for football so, guys, get out there and dig on some blues.
Friday night there's a full roster and an interesting choice might be T-Bone and Franny Mae doing an acoustic
set @ BBQ Inc. Franny has a nice set of pipes for some acoustic songs and Tommy on fat guitar? Cool.
Mirelle's is always good and I see Willie Steele is at Meehans. That's a fun bunch of pro's and a good
show.
Saturday is a full slate to say the least. Sweet Suzi is at Bobbique's, There's the Gathering of the
Slides where Mr. Kerry Kearney will no doubt be offering som inspiration. There's Pam Betti at Hazy Moon and
there's a bunch of those big bands giggin; Uppercut, That 70'S Band, Behind Closed Doors; lot's of brass out there.
Don't forget Sunday is the fundraiser for Motu and Sweet Suzi's Band with a great list of additional bands.
Those are always fun shows and make a great day of music and good vibes.
There is also an amazing show at Mulcahy's in Wantagh for Autism with Stanton Anderson, Barnaby Bye, Nacho
Mama and others.
I'll get to something if it kills me...scary thought... and I'll report back here. You do the same. Have
fun, don't be drinking and driving and thanks for checking in, blues fans.
I should explain something personal as it is affecting my routine of patronizing live music over the
past few months.
It is becomg clear that the ability to go out and sit for these events is a privelage that one might take
for granted. I have always been appreciative but not as much as I will be in the future.
My domestic situation is going through some turmoil and when I think I will be able to enjoy a night
out it vanishes in an instant...sometimes as I am walking out the door.
The night of the Sam Taylor tribute event at Bobbiques a week or so ago was that kind of meltdown.
I was dressed and walking out the door when the Ms. walked in and blew it up...like only a person who knows me that
well can do. It happened again as I was driving to Harvey's last night which is what prompts me to make this confession.
I don't like to make this too personal a journal but in the absence of musical content I feel the need to expain. I am not
the type that can make up things at least that has not been the case so far.
As for this Saturday night I had been wanting to go to Harvey's in Cedarhurst for some time. This
week there was a show with Donnie Celenza and friends that was billed as an exceptional cast. I was joyfully anticipating
that night.
While driving down Peninsula Blvd I got a couple of disturbing calls and I was all the sudden planning how
to get home (after planning to meet friends and making all that drive) to prevent any bad incidents back at the ranch.
I was so close to Harvey's that I parked the car, walked in, listened to 3 dynamite songs featuring Donnie
C, Friends and even Pat Hunter as I waited for my friends to arrive and then said my good-bye's. I never even
bought a drink.
At least I got to see Harvey's and at least I caught a few nice riffs by the talented DC and a few sultry
moments of Pat Hunter. The problem is though, that if I am going to offer you something to read about in the world of music
and inspiration I need to find some music and inspiration. That's hard to do when I am trying to put out fires at home.
I know the domestic issues are more important. That is not in question. It matters, though, that the music
and the ability to go out and take it in is important to me for emotional reasons. The more angst I experience in life the
more I need to find my equilibrium and my down-times. I am a father (of my own child, not with my wife). I need to maintain
my calm and poise. I don't have other distractions like golf, or a cabin upstate, or a fishing boat or anything. I have worked
and lived to raise a child and the only thing I have carved out in this life is the time I have for music and whatever time
I can muster to write about it.
I will keep fighting for my time and I will win some battles soon. I will also settle into a new routine
one way or another soon enough.
In the meantime I may have to come up with some fictional episodes in which case I will tell you at the
beginning if it is in fact an event or something I wish I had attended.
For the record I found Harvey's to be a good room for music but it was packed and there was not a seat to
be sat upon. The setting was classic blues-room ambience and crowd. Perfect demographics for me...agewise 30 to 50-types. There
was art on the walls, appropriately chosen or commissioned as the case may have been. There was good looking food being served
all over the place and a busy staff delivering it.
I can see that place being quite comfortable and I hope and expect to get there again soon for more of
a stay.
Donnie Celenza, even for three songs was amazing. Pat Hunter sounded dynamite and the band was all good.
That's all I can offer after a short look.
I will work hard at stabilizing things here for all the right reasons and with that I will be back soon
with more to share about live music on Long Island.
Thanks for my friends who offer to listen and make me feel okay. Friends are appreciated especially ones
with experience. It helps just to hear someone say "I know" when they do. To be honest I think I have had enough
of my own experience though. I want a less eventful year. I want a boring as hell year.. and I want to hear lots of music.
That sounds good right now.
If you are considering some live entertainment this weekend there are some good shows with some of the usual names
and some not so usual.
Of the familiar variety there are the shows at Harvey's Lounge in Cedarhurst which has been employing the
likes of Danny Kean, Donnie Celenza with a good cast of friends and also their former bandmate Pat Hunter who is now with
her own new supporting cast; The Pat Hunter Project. They are all good artists and worth a little drive down Peninsula Blvd.
Danny Kean is a dynamite R&B keyboard player and vocalist. He also happens to be vision impaired
in case you have not yet seen the amazing Mr. Kean. He is entertaining in so many ways with his formidable music skills,
his golden-lock'd dashing style and his energy.
With him is Donnie Celenza on guitar who is as good as it gets and his "Friends" always includes
some of the best drums, bass and horns on the island.
Pat Hunter offers soulful and sultry vocals and a kind of edge that makes even the covers interesting. Her
cast is also top notch and either show (at Harvey's or elsewhere) is a good weekend night.
For you suffolk fans there is the gritty/folksy blues of Kerry Kearney Band at Port Jazz. A night in
the busy north shore town is always a fun people-watching experience and a night with Kerry Kearney Band leaves you sort
of warm and full. The band gives you the complete sound of a traveling folk band with a distinctively blues edge. Their
music is nuanced by the flavors of time and travel. It's a local experience you must catch one day soon.
Another rich local artist that is in town for rare winter show is Lex Grey and her Urban Pioneers. (at JC's
in Manorville. Find out more at the Lex Grey link on Bands and Musicians Page). Lex Grey is full color Vaudvilleian bawdy
blues and that's when she's mellow. The lady holds nothing back and is a real deal performer. Her band has excellent sounds
with Vic Deglio on guitar and a stellar supporting cast. She and the Urban Pioneers spend most of their time on the road and
they offer something you won't find anywhere else..a genuine, original self-styled, no apology, no-way-you-can hate-it blues
celebration. They will leave you happily spent.
Suffolk also has our very own Pamela Betti out at Filthy Frogz in Ronkonkoma. Ms. Betti gives you all she
got. It's a show you'll enjoy not just for her gutsy vocals but for her uncensored one-of-the-girls humor. Pam Betti Band
also sports some good players in a changing cast from former Little Buster Blues Brothers to Jim Moran to jouneyman Jim Kolman.
There are other local favorites and talents this weekend like T-Bone & Franny Mae, Stevie Cochran, Tommy
Keys, Gail Storm, Blues Box, Gina Cutillo. Mirelle's always has a great show.
The many other shows posted on the calendar have supporting information on the websites of the bands and
the venues on the other pages here at the blog. They all have talent and many are free shows. One of them is always close
enough for you to go to without even checking a map. I don't post them if they're not worth going to. It's all better than
TV. It puts a little money out there in the economy and it makes you feel good.
So do it.
Thanks for checking in and I hope to see you out there somewhere.
So I needed some blues last night. I had some time...not a lot but I needed to get out.
I figured Pam Betti might have something nice to share and her band usually does as well. Friday night was
a good one at Front Street Pub in Massapequa Park..
The band was Bobby Schlessenger on keys, Frank Anstiss on drums, Al Levy on bass and Jim Kolman on guitar.
Nice group of players! Schlessenger makes the keys really sing, Levy layed down a really cool groove with Anstiss and Kolman
always has some good moments. Pam Betti, in all her glory lately, looked great and her chops were well honed. They had great
energy and I enjoyed every piece of the band...for as long as I lasted.
It seems they ran out of both Stoly and Kettle...my two favorite Kool-aids. The exceptional barmaid, Terry,
had a Polish brand stored away and pulled it out for me. I didn't get the name or maybe I did but I don't remember but it
was one smooth belt of a beverage. It must have been strong too...is that possible? Anyway, I had to take my leave early.
I have to aoplogize for that. Maybe it was a reflection of the trials I am undergoing.
If there is any justice I will get out again soon and fill my tank with blues sustenance. I'll keep you
posted for sure.
Thanks again for checking in and I hope to see you soon.
Sometimes it accompanies a reflection of times passed and people no longer in my life. The times
may have been hard then and the losses painful but now some of them are remembered in a better light. The pain goes away but
the connection to the particular music does not.
Sometimes blues is remembering good times passed and wishing I had them still.
Sometimes blues is just music that I like; soulful expression and feeling that someone is relating
something real.
There are times when blues is a means of managing a hardship. The music becomes theraputic, helpful, consoling.
During those times I need it more and I need to just let it in and let it be the company I need. Live performance is better
at providing that of course.
Veteran blues performers are purveyors of comradeship. They make music and they do it with feeling and when
it's real it is a ticket to ride with them on the bus. It is shelter from the elements. It is an offer to listen and understand
and relate...if you will.
There's lot's of things right now making me pensive and blue but it is at these times when I see these
things and I am here to share with you my experiences with music and blues. Thank God for this medium of music.
There were lots of good things to take out of my Saturday night at ET Quiggs this past weekend. I went to
hear SmokinGun and to support a new efffort by Junior who just started hosting weekend music events at the Bellmore bar and
grill.
ET Quiggs, which is located on Merrick Rd. about a half-mile west of Wantagh Parkway has been hosting a
Thursday night jam for years. That event has been frequented by some excellent blues and other players and has developed a
good following over time. The formula makes a lot of sense. Host good players for a regular jam, develop a name among musicians
and media and eventually you can cultivate those and other players to bring in some weekend business. I hope word gets around
so the bar-owners who get impatient with the lack of big turnout on the weeknight jams every week can see the payback
for the effort.
In this case the band, SmokinGun put on a great show to a nice crowd and in the spirit of the jam they
brought up some of the friends and jammers from ET Quiggs. It turned out to be dynamite night of music with an impressive
cast of players.
SmokinGun is Bill Marino on guitar, Rich Theil on bass, Jeannie B on vocals, in this case Ralph Santiago
on drums and that's a fun cast in itself. Marino brings some cool guitar chops, Jeannie B adds the vocal sweets and Theil
and Santiago bring a blues/rock vibe as well as anyone around here. Add to that a cameo by Mr. Donnie Celenza who
lit everyone up with a few tunes, John Judd who brings his own undeniable magic, Johnny Cola for some tastiness and a few
more faces showed up. It was another quality night for the blues/rock lover and so far I have had nothing but dynamite entertainment
in '09.
The joy and contentment I gained from my weekend of music was forgotten today when I heard the news that
Sam Taylor passed away. I did not know Mr. Taylor well but I met him a few times in recent years and I heard him play more
than a few times.
I always saw joy in his face and heard soulful blues from his guitar. His was a face and a smile I
will never forget and he was inspiring in that the smile and the music, I believe, were the same. Soulful expression
is manifested in many ways and he was an artist who seemed to enjoy life through expression. That's what inspires
me in music. I search for that which Mr.Taylor found. The ability to tap the love in ones soul which trumps
everything. It outshines the ugliness that we experience sometimes as people and the realities and hardships
and elevates us all to feel something better.
It was a pretty good way to start the new year of local music.
I had the same tough decisions about where to go. My good friends in O'Zone were at Brickhouse, there were
shows in Nassau I wanted to catch and my resolution is to spend more time in Nassau this year and I had an actual
invite to hang with friends at Giacomo Jacks for Brother Dave and the Brave. I chose to go to Giacomo's because, well, there's
nothing like good company and it is close to home and I like Dave's guitar playing.
The Brave consisted of Jack Moarino (I know I got that spelling wrong) on bass, Michael Fox on drums, Dave
on lead and last night Johnny Cola was adding some rich complement on rhythm. I would think a blues axe would
really dig a guitar like that on the side. Cola's power rhythm added cool styling for a few blues numbers.
The result was an excellent night of real, down blues. Dave on guitar is a deep well of blues expression
and he played one song after another of real salt-of-the-earth unpretentious guitar blues. It was like chicken soup for my
very blue self right now.
As if the able guitar stuff wasn't enough there was a real surprise vocalist joining the Brave. Chrissie
O'Dell was as down with her vocals as the guys were on guitars. I was happy with that night of blues.
I got three sets of nothing but solid stuff with three and four people delivering it. I don't think anyone can walk into a
local joint, not pay a cover and expect as good a night of music as I got last night. If the cast remains even
three quarters of who was there last night that's a great night of music.
My nights out have been rare lately. It is part holiday stuff and part other stuff but I did get out once
last weekend and I was so busy and otherwise occupied I never mentioned what a good night I came upon at Brickhouse last Sunday
night.
The jam with Jim Kolman had a great cast of players. Tru Doty on keys, Freddie Mac on keys, Kolman carved
out a few nice numbers on axe. JD Allen added some nice flavor. A guy named Tyler on guitar kicked ass. There
were some good horns, the new and improved Bill Post on drums had something to say. Clutch Reilly flew in from some far-away
place, added some cheer and lit up a few tunes on bass and Jay Sharkey vocalized a riveting rendition
of Exodus. That ain't easy! I think I have to get out there to the Brickhouse more often. That's a juicy jam.
So the New Year has promise; alleluia!
Thanks for checking in and get out there and see something, hear something, feel something.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
