Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
It has been a while since I did an actual weekend recap but this weekend I had a few nights of
entertainment so I thought I would share my impressions.
Friday night there was lots to choose from but a late start narrowed the choices. By the way, the chronic
late starts are unavoidable. I raise a young teen and her plans take precedence for the most part. I do my part of driving
and hosting and the social life is pretty important at that age. I know.
If there is something special I want to attend I negotiate with her. I get the rolling eyeballs and the
look like dad is quite immature but I know when to give in and I know I can find entertainment later at night when I have
to give in to her plans...which is most of the time.
So this Friday I was available arond 11:30 and I checked the calendar here for what looked good at
that hour. There were three shows in close proximity in Massapequa. One I had just found that night. It was not posted on
my calendar but it came in handy.
I started at Big Daddy's for John Judd and Co. Mr. JJ is one of those out-of-the-box guitar players that
never fails to entertain. The riffs are always creative and the variations keep it interesting. The cast was good with
Ralph Santiago on drums, Nick Pinto on bass, Johnny Pizza on guitar and Billy Wagner and Josh Allen standing in
on guitar for a few numbers.
Close by was Pam Betti at Front Street Pub and I also found out late that Chic n Martini was in the
same neighborhood at Irish Cottage.
John Judd band quit a little before 1am so I quickly headed less than a mile due west to
Front Street Pub only to find Jim Kolman packing up his instrument in front of the place. Jim confirmed that they were
done so I walked right past Front Street to Irish Cottage, a stone's throw away, and found Chic n Martini getting
ready for another set. I called a few friends who were still close by and we ended the night with another show and some good
music. CnM make some good rocknroll stuff and Mr. Steve Robinson did a short set on acoustic during the break which was another
treat.
Friday night ended up being a night of good variety and good time with friends. These things I like.
Saturday was sort of special as Giovanni vonEssen was in town. Gio is a jazz singer and someone I am fortunate
to call a friend. Ms. GvE actually bounces between Paris,Fr and NY for work and family so it is a treat to catch here here
again.
Her show was part of a Distinguished Artist Series sponsored by Town of Oyster Bay and other beaurocracies
and the venue, Plainview/Old Bethpage Library, is a beautiful auditorium that hosted a good crowd.
Gio, with Papa G on bass, Henning Stumm on drums and percussion and Bill Titus on guitar offered up two
sets of originals (Taxi and I Like It) and some jazzy covers; Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn and
others. Gio has a real, genuine jazzy sound and she frequently interacts with the audience. The
good size crowd really related to her both musically and personally. It was an enjoyable show and the jazz flavor is a rich
part of the fabric. I look forward to hearing more of it. I will keep you posted.
One aspect of a jazz show, as it is being targeted to mature adults, is that the shows are earlier in the
night. The event was done by 10:15. I had only to check in at home and then I was free again. I needed this. The tensions from a
collapsing domestic structure have been trying. A long weekend of musical escapism were just what the doctor ordered.
My last show of the weekend was to be Phil Varca and his recent cast of Slamjammers at my home base, The
Brightwaters Inn.
Mr. Phil was playing with Mr. Ed the Hat on drums and Mr. Tim Smith filling in on bass. The blues threesome
did some blues rockin. Phil Varca generates some serious mojo and I was head-bouncin, diggin the blues guitar on that guy.
The threesome was a regular power trio trippin on some SRV-type vibes
I had thoughts of heading to the Viking for the Groove King impersonation afterwards but I was a bit
too "happy" by the end of Varca and Co. and I figured I had a full weekend already.
I came across some blues politics in my travels this weekend and I see there is some drama in the Blues
Society of late.
A friend and blues fan, Keith McKenzie is apparently getting pinched by some recent happenings
in the LIBS and being that I only heard one side of it I should only say that I hope they all come to see eye to eye. The
LIBS provides a worthwhile service and many heads are better than a few. Keith must stay involved and his ideas are worthy
of remaining in the mix. I hope they work it out. If you are a member chime in and show some love.
Thanks for checking in music fans and thanks musicians for sending me your gig info. Keep doing it.
There are many styles of music out there and many are represented with live performers here on
Long Island.
As a matter of fact I attended the jam at Lefty's this past Wed. night with Papa G and some funk, soul and
even blues guys. It is an eclectic bunch and a growing jam... with some really good players.
I have a fondness for da blues of course. I have been enjoying all of the local artists of
the past few years and lately some new ones as well. This weekend there are both as Kerry Kearney is busy as always, Pam Betti
and Pat Hunter have shows. Check out the calendar. There is SmokingGun and Sweaty Betty, Jacks O Diamonds and Sly Geralds...
more. There are some talented vocalists that I have not been lucky enough to see a lot of yet like Chic n Martini, Gina
Cutillo and Jill Gioia and Katy Pearlman. There's Gail Storm (playing with Shenole Latimer)who dishes some cool blues.
Some of the "newer" stuff is out there too. John Judd has been a busy blues showman recently.
You can catch him at Big Daddy's in Massapequa...a smallish but blues-friendly room.
There is Trick Bag, another relative newbie at least in the blues category. They are a talented and
substantive group.
This weekend there is also some cool locally-generated jazz going on with Giovanni vonEssen. Gio is a soulful
jazz vocalist and she is performing with Henning Stumm among others (Henning was recently voted a top-ten jazz artist in NY
on Reverbnation.com).
There's lot's to choose from. If there is one near you, that you see on the calendar, check it out. I don't
list them if I don't think they are worth a look/listen. I only wish I could go to a few every weekend night. Unfortunately
it just doesn't happen like that. I could enjoy it that often though.
I happen to thrive on the vibe of performance and expression. I enjoy the vibe from the musician which
often comes forth as they perform. The more genuine the motive the more clear the expression. I have felt almost tangible
connections on occasion. The act of musical performance is a powerful artform. It is like acting but the performer
chooses their own lines and sometimes words. For sure they choose their own message and the better able they are to portray
it the more gratifying the performance....at least for me. But what the hell do I know?
Enjoy some live performance this weekend. It's good for the soul.
It has been a fairly good week music-wise but I have been pressed for the time to write about it.
Wednesday night I headed out to Overtimes for the Jim Moran/Pam Betti jam. It is actually more of a weekly
show but they do invite visiting players up for a few numbers. This past Wed. there was Jim Kolman standing in for a few numbers.
The cast was Jim Moran, Ed the Hat and Pam Betti who were playing with Dave Nesdall, a new (to me) guitar player
who was also good.
If you have not seen Pam Betti lately she is quite a new and improved entity.
Ms. Betti was beaming on Wed. and it had a lot to do with her new physique, thanks to a strict regimen among other things,
and even more energy than she had before. The increased effort she has invested in her physical aspect has translated into
improved delivery of her musical aspect. Pam was hitting all the notes and following them up with more strong notes. It was
a good show of talented players and a fun hang out. The Wed. night event at Overtimes gets a good crowd of adults for a weeknight.
Check it out!
It just so happened that I caught Ms. Betti and the Pam Betti Band at Mirelle's Friday night.
The show was billed as a Valentines party with Kerry Kearney and Phil Grande. Truthfully I was looking forward to all three.
Ms. Betti and Co. were in good form and I was looking forward to seeing them in an upscale Nassau venue. Kerry Kearney is
always good and I was looking forward to hearing him with Phil Grande who I have not heard in quite some time.
I got there around 11 and I learned that I missed Kerry Kearney and in fact Mr. Grande was under the weather.
Fortunately Pam Betti was up to the task and she had a talented cast with her for the show.
The roster for the Pam Betti Band was Jim Kolman on axe, Mr. Frank Centrone on keys (excellent), Craig Privet
on bass (also solid), and Dan Giacomini in sax (some dynamite moments)...Derek Hensley on skins and I almost didn't recognize
Derek in shirt and tie. He was also a strong piece on Friday night. The band and Ms. Betti were all doll'd up and they
put on a top-notch show. The good size crowd was wow'd a few times by Pam Betti and her glitter, energy and chops. Ms. Betti
had the show polished and amped up for the Mirelle's show and it was the kind of show any decent lounge would be proud to
host.
PBB covered the standards, Mustang Sally and some Janis Joplin and sprinkled in a few of her own like Betti's
Blues. They were all tight and high energy numbers. There were a few lower energy spots that offered some nice
blues moments but in that setting, with the glitter and tuxedo attire the "classy lounge show" worked well especially with a
dishy Pam Betti delivering on all cylinders.
The night ended at a fair hour. I had time to stop in at my local blues spot, Brightwaters Inn, for a taste
of Blue Matter. The grit rock n blues guys were finishig when I arrived to an appreciative crowd but soon after I arrived
Ms. Suzi Smith walked in for a late "hello" as well and, guess what, the band stayed on for a few more tunes.
Ms. Smith is fresh from her trip to Memphis where she competed in the International Blues Challenge
and she sounded dynamite. She and the Blue Matter Band have a moving rendition of Soulshine that they do well together and
it was a great way to end a busy Friday night.
There are a lot of good shows this Valentine's night. You can have a great time here on the Island of Long,
not spending a fortune, finding a talented and emotional live act and heading home for a memorable Valentine's with your
Valentine of choice...or whomever else happens to be with you.
Giacomo Jacks in Amityville (S Ketchum Ave.) is one happen'n blues joint.
It isn't big. It isn't well known, I don't think. There is nothing pretentious about the place or anyone
in it. They have last year's "Favorite Bartender of the Year", Patty (Billfoolery.com...Favorites of 08, 1/09, in case you
missed that post); and they have a decent juke box for those between-set downtimes.
Giacomo's also has the right assortment of Long Island blues...
Friday night I got out just in time to catch a few sets of Brother Dave & The Brave. I have been enjoying the bluescat
Dave and the Brave lately. This time they had an allstar cast. I turned a purple shade of blue when I walked in and saw
John Judd. There's a treat. I was going to get some down and gritty blues with some special sauce. And for the cherry on top
we got some Chrissie O'Dell vocals for a few tunes. These particular players have showed up recently with some genuine
stuff and the three of them together are a great show.
Brother Dave has a gritty style with substance and he's added some pithy vocals to go with it. The Brave
including Michael Fox on skins, and a fine bass player (who's name will appear here as soon as I get it) keep it grounded
and they throw in some clever bounce. Mr. Bill Post sat in on drums for a few tunes and he kept the flame burning.
John Judd on co-lead guitar adds another level of emotion and Ms. O'Dell complements the whole sound
with an almost casual,soulful yearning.
I heard a bluesy harmony of wonderful players and I hope they keep working that combination.
I hope Giacomo Jacks keeps finding the formula for hosting signature Long Island blues sounds too.
This is not to suggest that other places aren't hosting the same names. I'm just lauding Giacomo Jacks because
they do it locally, they have a consistent quality, a consistent taste and they have a fun, easy-going vibe.
I have been finding many of the same musicians and qualities in other hospitable settings like ET Quiggs
of late and Bobbique's, The Brickhouse, Brightwaters Inn and others.
It was a good night of music. Tell your friends and neighbors about these quality local shows
and places. Like everything...the more the merrier and in these tough economic times it is a lot cheaper than a show
in the city or a show of most any other kind.
We are not only creatures of habit but we are creatures of comfort as well.
I have managed to keep up my Wednesday night routine after many years and many trials. Sometimes
Wednesday nights have not been a happenin' night of music. But my schedule has been adapted and so-evolved as to
make it a regular thing. If I don't use it I may lose it. Someone in my house or in my extended group might see that
I did not go out one Wed. night and assume it is not so regular. They may take that opportunity to book me somewhere that
night or at some ungodly hour the next day thereby making the after-effect a prohibitive event. So I go out every Wednesday
night.
I also try to keep it local for obvious reasons but if there is not something "quality" (weeknights have
a different scale) I travel. I happen to have a lot of fun on those traveling nights. I get to check out the Donnie Celenza/Dave
Patrick jam or the Jim Moran/Pam Betti jam or the Joe Vicino thing. I just have to be careful with the "happiness" intake
and the driving experience.
The comforts of local (near Bay Shore) jams have come and gone. There was the Blue Matter
jam at Lefty's that ended a year or two ago. There was the jam at Brightwaters Inn that ended recently. There was a short-lived
thing in between at Mustang Sally's (they never got the idea at all). It was nice having some decent music only a few short
drinks um...miles from home. That went away and I was on the road.
Well I have found something qualitative again. Back at Lefty's I found the H3O group (Papa G, Tim Dorsey
and Andy Witt) a few times recently. This Wed. night they seemed to grow another limb or two. It was a
good jam.
There were some additional characters of course but the whole motly crew generated an actual jam event.
It had a funk/jazz/R&B/Warner Bros.cartoon flavor but it worked.
Of note was a medly of percussive expressions by Henning Stumm. I am not sure this is the correct
term but his first instrument was a two piece bongo with which he displayed some cool fast action. Mr. Stumm
has some groove in them jazzy hands. He followed with an up-beat number on a triangle that surprised me also and
a few other fun pieces. It was a good fit for Henning with some jazz bass by G and the other H3O guys.
Joining in the chemistry experiment was some good work by Bill Post (drums) and Dave Pellegrino (bass).
Roy from O'Zone was there for some hip hop vocals. The result was some fun stuff.
I will always gravitate to da blues so I will be out and about at other places but it is good to have something
good in a few-mile radius.
I heard from Wally (Brightwaters Inn) who is now in Memphis witnessing Sweet Suzi and the International
Blues Competition. I heard only a few hours ago that she wowed them with her first set and Wally was having a blast. That
guy always seems to be having a blast. I think I'll start following him around.
Anyway, Wally also offered a free gift (those vague offerings are shady) for anyone who patronizes
The Brightwaters Inn in his absence for 5 of the current 6 nights. Cynthia is taking all shifts which ain't bad. I am
going to enter the competition. Finally a contest that I am suited for. It isn't too late for ya'll... especially if
you like "free gifts". I do.
So the weekend approaches. There are a number of good shows but this weekend I will let you choose the favorites.
I like many of them and I think I highlighted some of the names last week that I might do this weekend if I were so inclined.
Go, listen, enjoy and let me know who you dug. Feel free to e-mail me at Bill@Billfoolery.com with a few words about who you loved and I will pass that on....as long as it was not your mate, band, family member or substance
dealer and it is an objective rave.
I don't want to hear anyone complain about the musical talent here on Long Island... and in my own
hometown no less. There were two great shows within 2 miles Saturday night.
I had a rare treat of Kerry Kearney Band at the Brightwaters Inn first of all. It was a real down home
comfortable setting with as good a guitar-starring band as you will find.
I was particularly entertained by Mr. K's fast pickin stuff. He had the rock n' roll vibe goin and
it was good. I like the slide and folksier riffs for some variety but his pickin is more my style when he gets on the
edgy side of rock. The band was tight as usual and Ms. Bouncin Betty (Elizabeth Murphy) was fun on drums and Frank Celenza,
one of the amazing Celenza brothers, is one groovy bass player. It was a fun night and you have to hand it to the Brightwaters
Inn for booking the quality stuff.
For an encore I headed a short distance east to the Viking in Islip for Andy Aledort. From dynamite to explosive;
it was a guitar fans prom night.
Aledort packs the Viking with an enthusiastic crowd and he was rockin with his usual cast including Mike
DiMeo on keys. The Hendrix stuff is covered as well as can be and everyone loves the Stevie Ray and Allman covers.
Aledort is one of the few guitar players that can convey any of the Hendrix flavor through the songs.
There is so much being said between the bars of Hendrix tunes and so few of his stuff is played other than Hey Joe and Purple
Haze. Hendrix was expressive through his stylings and how he delivered the notes and the now homogenized tunes of Hey
Joe and Purple Haze (for example) usually miss the nuance of Hendrix completely. Aledort gives me more Hendrix than anyone
I have heard cover Hendrix.
I had a lot of fun Saturday night. I wonder how many people in Nassau and Suffolk are hearing about this
stuff. I don't think I saw it covered in Newsday. I guess you will have to come here for your local guitar hero stuff. Better
tell your friends.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
