Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
In an effort to share my space and attention with as many people and places as possible I tried another
location for last weeks Wednesday night out. There are a lot of jams on Wednesday night which is both good and bad. Some jams
are closing but there are more to attend making driving far less necessary.
Jessie's Roadhouse has been on (and briefly off) for a long time. The Merrick restaurant/blues club
has a convenient location (Merrick Rd. just east of Meadowbrook Pkwy) and last Wednesday night featured Gail Storm the blues/boogie
singer-keyboard player along with Joe Vicino on guitar and wonderful guest violin player, Jaimy Lynn who made for
a dynamic trio. It was a fun show and a great example of what great talent one can hear on a Wednesday or any other night
of the week at Jessies and a number of other dedicated blues/live music clubs.
The weekend offered a lot of good shows too but I only got Saturday night this week. Raising a teen demands
a lot including many a weekend night of hosting teenagers or driving or just waiting at home for a safe arrival.
So Saturday I first took up an offer to visit and have a drink at Maggies in W Babylon for Jim Moran's
weekly jam. I only stayed for one drink but it was a fine drink with plenty of atmosphere. It was a dark, rainy late
afternoon. Maggies had a good crowd and Jim was really working a few tunes with a good cast. I don't ever remember such a
dark sky in the afternoon and I thought it was the perfect place to be for the moment; a blues joint, Jim Moran bring
some real bluesy pickin, a full bar of hard-working people and me and another single parent looking for a quick little escape
on a gloomy day. Well I got the call to go pick up my child and I left Maggies looking forward to a Saturday night but it
put me in the mood for some blues and there was plenty of that on the calendar.
I decided to check out The Bad Moon Saloon which has been faithfully hosting blues for months with great
stuff and rarely a cover. This week was Chrissie O'Dell & Friends. In this case the friends were Bill Marino, Rich Thiel
and even Jeannie B (all of SmokinGun). There were more friends to come later including Gary Sellers and Brother Dave and Bruce
Dixon. It turned out to be one of those awesome nights of gutsy performances from everyone, song after song. Ms. O'Dell led
the affair with an inspiring performance considering she spent the previous night in ER with yet-undiagnosed issues. But she
couldn't miss the gig. She made it and she sure brought her chops. Koko would have been proud with FishinTrip and quite
a few others.
Jeannie B also had her blues notes with her and Bill Marino and Thiel brought
excellent guitar and bass. The cameos by Gary Sellers, Bruce Dixon and Brother Dave were all quality numbers. You won't
find much better blues all in one night so make sure you tell people it's out there.
It's at Maggies, The Bad Moon, Jessie's, and dozens of other fine establishments on Long Island.
Thanks you-all for sending me your gig information (for my calendar) and thanks to the people who read my
site and offer feedback on how I might improve it. As a matter of fact I was asked recently if I can include descriptive terms
with the bands so readers will know what kind of music a band offers. I may attempt that and if a band doesn't like my choice
of terms please feel free to let me know. (bill@billfoolery.com).
A busy week in central Long Island began last Wednesday night (Oct 14) with a few good jams.
I started at Big Daddy's in Massapequa for some John Judd and Co. John had the rhythmic and easy going Ralph Santiago
on drums and Johnny Pizzacarolla (bass and vox. I know I spelled that wrong) for a groovin three piece and some good rock/blues.
Judd's show with his fast and creative 6-string and his friends is a favorite stop for me on a Wednesday night.
I got a late start (and it ends fairly early) so it was a brief visit before heading to Candle Light
Cabaret in Amityville. The guys from O'Zone; Roy Leftenant (drums) Clem (bass), Julio (keys) were the hosts as some dynamite
pieces joined them including Carolyn Hawthorne (soulful vox) and some hot sax and other pieces. The new jam (Rte 110, south
of Sunrise, N of Montauk) gets an eclectic array of talent including a comedienne and numerous singers. All have been good
and so has been the audience. We were even joined by Ms. Sweet Suzi for a roof-raising finale' with Ms. Hawthorne, Steve Sclafani on
drums, Papa G and Arty Panico who all rolled in at the end of the night and joined the cool cast of players. That was a rolicking
jam! Check itout!
The weekend brought various opportunities for shows.
Friday night I started at Big Daddy's again for Pam Betti Band who I try to catch when they are as far west
as Massapequa. They have been barnstorming out east and I have been missing their fun shows.
The fireplug Pammy B, in new short brown locks and looks, gave it her all as usual and kept
an appreciative group completely enthralled with gutsy blues, breathy vocals and some hilarious lines. The good cast also
delivered some quality blues and it was a fun set .... And I still had time to catch a set at Giacomo Jacks.
I had not been to Giacomo's in a while and as usual there was a fun crowd for Sly Geralds who had guest
vocalist Sweaty (Diane McArdle) Betty on the bill. I found out later that I missed some other guest vocals but I was glad
to still have live music at that hour. Sly & Co. with Ms. McArdle had a nice group dancing and all were having fun. It's
a dance/blues playlist (does that make it R&B) and people were enjoying and it was a good night at Giac's.
I often look for a slow blues style show (sometimes even jazz) and sure enough I ended up at Giacomo
Jacks again on Saturday night for Cat's Pajamas. I got a late start as usual and that's fairly close and Cat's Pajamas (PapaG-bass,
Brian Duggan-axe and Andy Witt-drums) offers a jazzy style mix of, well everything. They are a creative crew and Giacomo Jacks
had another nice crowd and I enjoyed the hell out of a set of some jazz/soul/bop as I have heard it called.
There were numerous festivals and some other cool headline shows this weekend but I could not plan early
evenings or days this weekend and I go where I can go... sometimes it's all just local stuff but I try to get to something
so I can keep the convseration going with ya'll.
The prosperity of the local music industry means so much to so many people including me. I try to provide
some buzz somehow and there's a lot to talk about. Even going to the same few places I saw/heard a nice variety of artists
and there were good size crowds (albeit in smallish places) but the enviornment exists for people to perform. People are pursuing
their music and people are enjoying it including me so it's all good in the local worlds of live music which is where
music meets the people. Live music is so much more potent especially when it's blues. Thank god for it all.
Thanks to those friends and acquaintences who offered consolation after reading my last post and sensed
some sadness. I don't always realize how my posts sound when I am searching for words to express my feelings.
FYI...I am here expressing my artistic endeavors. The frustrations I express are just those that you all
feel in your searches for truthful expression. I just have a harder time finding what I seek than perhaps you do, who are
more articulate artistically. I feel, I seek and I express. If I do not "find" then I am frustrated. If I elliminated the
"seek" part I would be a fiction writer or a poet and I am not motivated to do that as of now.
Anyway, I had a pretty good week of "seeking and finding". Last Wednesday I visited Big Daddy's in Massapequa
for the John Judd/ Ralph Santiago jam for the first time in a while. It was a good one. John, Ralph and friends were
accompanied by members of the Jim Kohler Band. The keys, bass and Kohler guitar were a real nice complement to John Judd and
Co. They offered a full rhythm with depth and crafty solos by Paul Weiss on Keys and Kohler (guitar and vox) and his
bass player.
Judd of course provided some magic and it was a fully satisfying night of blues and live music in general.
They played unusually late, after midnight and there was a decent group enjoying the show.
As for the weekend I completely enjoyed a night at Harvey's Lounge in Cedarhurst on Saturday.
The band was Boulevard East w/ Donnie Celenza, Tony Beard (drums), Chris Palmaro (keys) and
Chris Weigers (bass). There was also a nice conga player, Butch.
The music was jazz, blues and creative forms of some rock and jazz standards. It was all so good with
Celenza on guitar going off the charts song after song. I got a full show of Donnie C after dozens of small samples at
jam after jam. He and his all-star cast ad-lib'd every tune with inspired takes both solo and collaborative. There were
few moments to stray for even a second without missing something clever and cool.
Harvey's is to be lauded for bringing quality jazz and blues (and with no cover charge)
and offering a comfortable enviornment. The room seats close to a hundred, I estimate, with tables, chairs and couches.
There is a full menu and waitresses do an excellent job of serving food and drink. It has a "speakeasy" feel with brick walls, few
windows and fine art on the walls. Check here and on Harvey's website (Music Venues Page) for their weekly schedule.
One more note. I was reading the current issue of Blues Revue Magazine (w/ Ruthie
Foster on the cover) and I came across a review of The HitmanBlues Band new CD; Pale
Rider. I recommend you read the review and buy the CD but here are some quotes from the magazine. "...an entertaining
brand of blues", "practically radio-ready", "Strong singing, a great-sounding recording, and precision playing by the band
make Pale Rider (Nerus Records) recommended listening." How about that!
Congrats Russ!
Thanks for checking in and enjoy a holiday Sunday night.
Sometimes I am just too tired or too busy in the following days to tell you about
my weekend and sometimes it wasn't all that interesting. This week I am hyper-busy and the past weekend was only marginaly
interesting. I tried to see, like 5 shows Saturday night and and I ended up catching glimpses of just about all of them and
actually sitting and enjoying none.
I was in Ronkonkoma on personal business so I hit that part of suffolk from top to bottom and it was all
a blur.
I first stopped at Dirty Martini since I was so close and there I caught one drink with Drama Mama, a decent
rock cover band (and a decent crowd at one of my favorite rooms). I split after one because I was on a mission to find
some blues and that wasn't it.
I headed down to Bobbique's for Todd Wolfe and I caught one somg before a break came and I didn't want to
sit around after all that traveling. I headed across the street for O'Zone at the Brickhouse and that was a fun scene and
people were dancing but it wasn't blues. They are a fun funk band but I got a call from a freind in Nassau who was considering
some blues and it was just early enough to catch a set if I left right away... so I did.
Unfortunately as I was driving west my friend called and cancelled. I was now somewhere between funk and
blues and it was somewhere between midnight and "I'm not done on a Saturday night".
Well I ponied up to Brightwaters Inn where Wally always has some good blues playing and there I could ponder my
options and hope something or someone was still out on a mission for some you-know-what.
It never happened and I walked out on some perfectly good shows and soon it would be Monday...
I was feeling the blues and I had no where to go.
Well the week is upon us and it is Wednesday and soon it will be another weekend and I think I will make
it. There are plenty of good shows on Wednesday night so I will get my midweek fix and the coming weekend has lots of good
stuff.
I survived. It was hard and I felt that despair, that hollowness in the gut that longs for a haunting
voice or an inspirational moment but as always the days come and go and Wednesdays happen every week and so do weekends.
Yes, I'm beat but I had to share that just in case someone out there needs to find a cure for the desperate
days that happen.
Thanks for listening and thanks to the bands and musicians that send me their gigs... and have a great night of
music whatever night that happens to be.
A taste of New Orleans blues was welcome news to this Long Island blues fan.
Bryan Lee, the flavorful blues guitar man and his traveling band of likewise entertaining players were the headline act at
Mirelle’s in Westbury this Tuesday, September 29. As a regular patron and journalist of live blues on Long Island I greatly
appreciated a night of Bryan Lee and The Blues Power Band in the comfy and tasteful confines of the Post Ave., Westbury music
room. The principals at Mirelle’s (Lori B and George L) who have the ongoing challenge
of offering interesting entertainment for a frustratingly sedentary group of suburbanites do an excellent job of bringing
in talent week to week. All aspects have been considered including a comfortable setting, good sound, good service and reasonable
cost of access. The acts have been high quality with wide ranging styles. Mirelle’s has also plugged in some quality local
talent which is an oft overlooked and bountiful resource. Bryan Lee, the New Orleans electric guitar artist had
a cast that included John Perkins on drums, Bill Blok on bass, Brent Johnson on accompanying six-string and our own Danny
Kean on keys. All but Mr. Kean are Mr. Lee’s regulars and play out of New Orleans. The group
had played with Long Islands own Danny Kean before as they have been through these parts in recent years and invited the charismatic
blues, rhythm and soul performer to join them again. Both Mr. Lee and Mr. Kean are visually challenged which boggles the mind
twice as much when you experience them as a pair. They displayed profound and heartfelt emotion that was echoed joyfully by
all six players. The “Blues Power Band” took from their recent cd “Katrina Was Her Name” and
highlighted the talented cast with frequent solos and rich bouncy blues solos by Bryan Lee and the others. His style brought
distinctive nuance with rich colorful suggestions. John Perkins drums were heavy, driving and purposeful off a well balanced
bass by Blok and a zesty six-string (Johnson) on the side for an interesting and widening range.
After a steady diet of Long Islands takes on Chicago, electric and rock blues (however skillful) it was a rich experience
that tickled my palate and peaked my appetite for more of that cajun blues.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
