Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
This has been a landmark week for this website for a number of reasons.
First of all this weekend has, by a good margin, the most events ever posted. It is not just the amount
of shows that matters to me but the fact that they are all shows in my target genre's and "markets" (quality, over 30, non-disco)
tells me that musicians are motivated and there are enough interested venues to attempt to sustain all the shows.
I have considered that perhaps I am just being made aware of more shows but I have enough information
to surmise that there are more shows... as well as more information. In any case I am glad to see all the activity
and I'm grateful to all those who keep me informed.
My other big news is the new E-Commerce "store" that I added. The store is still under construction
but I can take credit cards now so if anyone wants to offer cd's, t-shirts or other music-related products let me know and
we can work out a plan. I will be offering t-shirts and other products of my own. It will take a week or two to get some
items up for sale.
I can take offers for advertising spots now as well. I will be offering banner ads and poster spots for
events and CD's. I will be putting up the usual posters for local festivals but if you want to place a poster for a specific
event I will offer a spot on the homepage at a very reasonable rate.
As for my recent entertainment I have had a few fun nights and afternoons recently. For last
weeks St Patty's night I got out late and missed most of the holiday fare and by that time I missed most of the music too
but I checked out Bliss(squared) in Blue Point in an attempt to hear Bobby Sexton with Cindy Lopez. I got there as they were
packing up but the place was a nice cozy spot for a duo or trio and a nice looking restaurant.
I heard Ms. Lopez with Retro 69 at Bad Moon the following weekend and she's a nice vocalist for some tasty
rock/blues and jazz. Retro 69 has a full bag of variety and a fun vibe. I ended last Saturday night at Jessies Roadhouse for
Andy Aledort. What better way to punctuate a weekend than a set of AA and Mike DiMeo and Co. That's furious rock with blues...
with all kinds of talent. If you haven't checked out Andy Aledort and the Groove Kings they are a must see show.
Bobby Sexton is a talented and busy jazz (and "other") guitar player and he can be found
in Sayville every weekend and many other places. Stay tuned.
I also checked out the LIBS (LI Blues Soc) Muddy Waters theme event at Bad Moon last Sunday. Again
I arrived mid-show but there were some rich performances by talented artists. I caught Motu for a few tunes
and he brought a bluesy vibe and I caught Chrissie O'Dell and One Hot Mess who also got down (way down) with some "Muddy"
blues and other stuff.
I was able to stay for one tune of Gary Sellers and Co. His guitar and his cast also brought some moody
Muddy. I heard that I missed some great stuff with TG & The Hound Dogs early on and I will be looking them up for my playlist.
This week I wandered into Ollie's for some Wednesday night entertainment. I have been bouncing around from
Bad Moon to Jessies to Ollies to who-knows-where next week. There's so much going on lately. This week Ollie's w/ Sly Geralds had
a fun cast of players including Adam Tese who is joyful on sax and a great cast of vocalists and musicians.
Thursdays are also tremendous nights for music lately and I may start alternating my weeknight so I can
catch all that is going on.
Thanks again to all those who send me your gigs and to those who give me feedback on the
website. I do this for my own love of live performance but I'm glad that others are enjoying it and your feedback helps
make it better.
Take in some live music this weekend and keep me posted.
It's been a harrowing week of wanderings among Long Island's live music events.
Last weekend I was homebound on Friday night and I had high hopes of fullfilling my musical longings on
Saturday. I was unaware of the looming Nor'easter and had I known I would have made more of an effort to escape on Friday.
Saturday night was almost a bust as many shows cancelled and many were just too far to attmept in the wet windy conditions.
Luckily I had Mr. Andy Aledort and the Groove Kings at The Viking in Islip to save my weekend from a total loss.
A weekend without any inspiring emotional sustenance could have been tragic. With the tumultuous waves of situational
angst thrashing about in my hollows a lack of the countering influences of melodious elucidations could have caused unfathomable
damage to my psyche not to mention my digestive system. I was saved, thankyouJesus, by Mr. Aledort and the Groove Kings with
some psalms from the book of Hendrix among other musically biblical pieces.
Life has been trying with work and child and home and bar closings and healthcare debates and Met injuries
and Yankee glorifications and musical rainouts and people suffering (real) and my minivan showing signs of mortality...
and hormonal male singleness to top it all off. If not for blues or even just secular music it would be too much
to handle. Real!
So this weekend do a sundance, do a child-sleepover-the-friends-house dance, do the tax-return-get-here-soon
dance but do the let-me-get-out-for music dance so there will be no scary consequences and so you and I can get to George
Bouchard or Chrissie O'Dell or Andy Aledort or SmokinGun or Pamela Betti or Trick Bag or Gail Storm or Yo Daddy or SOMEBODY!!
Can I get an Amen?!
Oh and write to your congresspeople and Nassau County officials who are HARASSING BARS and tell them
to LAY OFF THE LIVE MUSIC SCENE!! I will be posting more about that soon.
Thursday. 3/11... a great weekend of music approaches.
My Wednesday night wanderings have been a mix of things in recent weeks. I have enjoyed the new Bad Moon
cast with Jim Kolman (hosting)sandwiched between two June Eysel- lead jams and both were different and both offered stuff
I liked. Kolman of course offered some blues guitar moments with himself, John Judd and many others and Ms Eysel's jams
are fun affairs with vocalists and dancing friends and good vibes all around. Stay tuned there for more good jams on Wednesday
nights.
I also checked out the Sly Geralds thing at Ollie's Point in Amity this week and that was a good cast as
well. The group of Sly and Diane Mc (Sweaty Betty) and BA Fagerland and Robin Knapp and Adam Tese and Dave Nesdall, Johnny
Cola, Fred Piscop, many more.. made for a non-stop show and a good jam.
As for the weekend I see a lot on the schedule but for the sake of sharing some information I can tell
you that I may check out Mamafunk and the Mudcats at Gibson St. Cafe in Bay Shore. That looks like a nice restaurant
and Ms. Funk and Co make some fun funky, blues rock and other good stuff. I have not caught them in a while and will try to
get to that.
Also on Friday I am aiming at the Wall Street Jumpers with John Judd, Ralph Santiago and others at Juggs
& Strokers in Merrick. Mr. Judd is a guitar player extraordinaire and he will entertain you for sure with a rock blues
mix of some stunning guitar and good band performance. The Friday calendar is full of stuff so check something out.
Saturday night I would like to get to Buttered Soul at Ollies Point in Amity where Mr. Hopping puts
on a good show of blues/rock with some good vocals. It is an early start though so I will be lucky to make that.
Later on that night there is Brother Dave & The Brave at Giacomo Jacks also in Amityville. Thats a show
I like to sit and get comfortable with as Brother Dave and friends display true blues with a mix of some rock and country
stylings...just as flavors. Dave on guitar is one of the really excellent performers available here on the island
if you like something a little different and genuine.
Speaking of diffeent and genuine there is also Papa G out in Patchogue (Once and For All) with one of his
eclectic Trio's. This time he features one Cindy Lopez on vocals who Papa G tells me is a good listen. I believe him and I
also enjoy his funky bass for a good show.
By no means is this supposed to be the list of best or only shows to see. I am just trying to inject some distinctive
color on some of the acts. I will try to offer more of that.
Get out and catch some live music this weekend. It's a good calendar of events with a good mix os stuff.
In my ongoing pursuit of inspiring music I have had numerous opportunities in the last week or two. I have tried
to keep it bluesy and interesting and new and thats not always easy when I get one night on a weekend and one night during
the week lately.... and I don't often get to choose those nights.
I also have to consider going to the same places too often even if the artists rotate. I want to spread
whatever attention I can to as many places as I can and I want to maintain objectivity and an open mind. That ain't easy.
Somone always has an issue with some place or some band and I am often asked to side with someone.
Being that I am not a musician I am apparently safe to talk to. I admit it is all fascinating. I am glad that I can keep somewhat
up on local affairs so I can do something useful if necessary. I happen to like most people but I don't take on
someone's enemies just because I am that person's friend. I will make my own enemies thank you very much.
I have always been averse to conflict so I make every effort to find a place of compromise and
I always seek the motivation behind a seemingly careless move by someone. It all gets tiring however. I just want to
listen to inspring music and I don't want to have to worry about too many peripheral issues.
There are many political issues in a music scene and it all matters because it affects
people but like the issues of the world at large, we can only be involved in so many things. We have to trust the
people who are making the decisions, maybe share an opinion here and there and cope with it all as best we can.
If you have a strong feeling about something that is changing or something that needs changing say something.
There are numerous chatrooms on Yahoo and on Craigslist and you can send me an opinion. I will post it or discuss it here.
I also added a comment function by the way...see below the calendar.
In the meantime take in a show this weekend. Check the calendar and get out for some inspiration. Thats
what matters!
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
