Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
Well I didn't get out for any mid-week music but last weekend I caught a good show at Biddy Spratts,
the new joint in W Islip on Sunrise Hwy.
Schroeders Ghost was playing and being that I had transportation issues last weekend I felt lucky to
have a damn good band right there within walking distance from home should that become necessary. Thank god it wasn't.
Schroeders Ghost with Pam Dixon on lead vocals, Tommy Steigler on skins, Joe Sanfilippo on axe and Frank
Bisceglia on bass do blues/rock and a few other things and they put on a fun show. The playlist included a few dynamite
tunes by Deep Banana Blackout which got a kick out of the nice size crowd.
Ms. Dixon goes remote with a dynamic vocal performance and the up close and personal thing
is nicely done. She has the personality, chops and magnetism to pull in an audience and keep them involved. The band
also delivers with some good guitar riffs and varied upbeat rhythm. It was a fun night. A good show!
The place is a good room for music with ample space, tables and a friendly staff. They even waited tables
for drinks which is helpful. I'm often hesitant to get up for a drink for fear of losing my seat. Funny what stupid things
enter my head but bar-room real estate a valuable commodity.
The weekend offers some rich entertainment as the Jazz Festival is going on in Long Beach.
There is also the Terry Reid show at Mirelle's with Frank Latorre and the King Bees on the bill as well.
Mulcahy's has a good one with Stanton Anderson, Seven Turns and Andy Aledort is on that bill too.
There's the Merrick Street Fair and of course SmokinGun has a few shows. Damn. What's a music fan to do?!
Well I hope you find time to get out .
Thanks for stopping by and be careful out there. Remember there's always a way home when you've had a few
drinks and whatever it is it's cheaper than a DWI.
In a week spent digging my way out from a pile of life's debris I have had some welcome distractions
in the way of Jimi Hendrix celebrations. Mr. Hendrix left this life on September 18, 1970.
I am finally moved to pay homage after strolling in to Barnes & Noble last night with only a wrinkled
$10 bill in my wallet and in search of something inspiring to read. I saw the Blues Revue 20th Anniversary issue featuring
Jimi Hendrix and I noticed the mercifully low price of $5.99. I grabbed the magazine like it was my first issue of Playboy,
paid for it and bolted. It's rare that I find such rich entertainment and get change from $10.
My personal experience with blues began with Jimi Hendrix's Blues (compilation) cd. In fact I found
it also on the cheap, in a rack of reduced rate cd's in a Los Angeles music store in 1996. I was in the funk of my life and
I was searching for inspiration back then too. I am a child of the 60's and 70's but my music experience back then was my
older brothers collection which included some Dylan, Van Morrison and Moody Blues. I was never personally moved until my time
was right and I found that cd.
The Blues cd includes, among others, Once I Had a Woman which moved me to tears. The whole cd moved me.
I had not been initiated to blues but when I heard Jimi's pain and I heard that expression and his love for his mother
and the other women and people in his life I understood the role of his music in those pieces. I understood that
other people shared and exceeded my experiences and found artful ways to experience it. It was a cathartic experience and
I immediately began researching Hendrix's influences and his life.
From there I discovered Albert King, Solomon Burke and and the many players he met on the chitlin
circuit... and the world of blues was open to me.
I took from all that a vulnerable artist in a Jimi Hendrix that was driven to play from his earliest
years when he experienced an unstructured family and home and he had music around him from his surroundings (Seattle) and
various family members. Music became that which consoled him and gave him a religion, as it were. It was more than his passion.
It was something he needed to do and before he had any money to own a working guitar he played with a discarded 3 string
instrument and he played with a broom but he finally got a guitar (right-handed) and after that was never without one. He
was so poor he had to hock his guitar numerous times so he would play with anything. But he always played and he
always asked players to show him their licks. He was a nuisance to the players he met at first. But he was driven. He needed
to find ways of expression. He needed to "be" and music was the only form of expression he could access.
The life of great deprivation, pain and lack of structure and formal training drove Jimi
Hendrix to exceptional and uniquely creative musical expression. He did it with grace and a kind of peaceful
acceptance. His struggles were great but he never lost faith, nor questioned the outcome. Music was life whether he "made
it" or not.
Realizing how Jimi Hendrix passed, his is still an inspiring story of survival /success and living
the moments of life as opposed to looking forward to stardom or wealth.
I understood his demise as more a product of a fragile psyche from being so self-realized and being particularly
vulnerable to the grandeur of the "elements" he experimented with. He epitomizes blues expression for me and while he
will always be missed he will always be appreciated by me and many others.
` Is it autumn yet? Damn. It's been a beautiful summer weather-wise and my daughter seemed to have a satisfying
time but I never had to scramble so hard for dollars in my life. Every day I look at the numbers and scratch my head. "Where
the hell is it coming from today?". But by the end of the week, I made it... sort of. At least I got there without losing
electricity or any other services but it has been a stretch and I am stressed from stretching and stretched from stressing.
I have been doing it with the help of my friends by the way and I love them all; the ones who offer
friendship and understanding and the ones who offer work projects and the ones who even forward me some grease on
occasion. The time of working for money as opposed to raising my child and working around that ...will come. In the
meantime I get by with friends and personal and soulful satiation in the manner of music and, you guessed it, blues.
This week my Wednesday night offered a little episode with Bobby Sexton and Cindy Lopez at Bliss in Blue
Point. I saw that on the calendar and sighed with relief knowing I'd get to sit and take in some mellow stuff. Theirs is a
jazzy guitar performance that peaks my interest with every surprising note with a pleasent and conversational vocal
that does pretty little dances with some otherwise stationary standards. There is often a blues number or two
which illicits a wider smile but it's the downright unpredictable trajectory of Mr. Sextons meandering that exercises
me. For an added bonus Sly Geralds popped in for a visit and a cameo or two. The bass playing band master sitting in on some
jazz was a surprisingly good fit and he settled in for some solid jazz-bass boppin. I thoroughly enjoyed the night (again)
and I recommend the duo enthusiastically to all you over-30 music loving types.
The summer is closing fast but that means festivals and lots of weekend stuff as if to make use of every
outdoor opportunity. Check out Cedar Beach this weekend (click on the poster for details). It's a large festival event and most
of Long Islands blues talent pool is there for your ingestion and enjoyment.
Let me also point out a cool little event at Forest Ave Books in Glen Cove on Saturday
with Andy Aledort. It is to support an artistic and independent book store and it is an excellent opportunity
to hear Mr. Aledort and Mike Dimeo in a cozy little setting.
I am going to start cataloging the local blues acts on one of my pages here. I will add them one at a time,
in no particular order, with band bios, general descriptions, general playlists, links, etc. I have been asked to do
this a few times but it is a task that may take some time. Blues bands will come first and I will be getting in touch. If
you don't want to be "covered" thats fine. I will still post your gigs if you want.
Thanks for the gig info and the feedback you offer and thanks again for stopping by.
After a busy weekend of bouncing around there are some things to share. I try to talk about blues because
it is dear to me and with the little attention it gets elsewhere I make it a point to discuss it here.
The venues I follow are the ones that host blues on Long Island (Nassau/Suffolk) and I try to cover all
the live music that might be of interest to the "blues demographic".
I recently visited Jessies Roadhouse in Merrick for another good show and Joe V told me that the place is
sold and will no longer be a blues venue... at least thats not the plan for the new place now.
I am disappointed as Jessies was booking good stuff and they hosted a jam on Wed. nights and always
had something good on weekends. These are hard financial times and very few places seem to be able to thrive with a blues
roster. The ones that seem to carry on are the ones that have generated an alternative identity and don't need to rely on
music for income.
I had some short visits this weekend to some of the above mentioned blues joints but it was hit and miss
this time.
We started at Giacomo Jacks for The Jim Kohler Band and the place was rockin pretty good but my little posse
and I had an agenda and we headed out after a set to a Farmingdale spot for one of our favorite blues bands. We were disappointed
to arrive and find no music. The band had been sent home for a light turnout. That must have been an early decision because
we got there before midnight and there was no sign of the band.
I have a hard time with that. A band books this stuff and does not book a back-up gig. They hire baby-sitters,
turn down other opportunities and pack their stuff and go wherever the hell it is for the night. The risk has already
been taken. Patrons will either show-up or stay or not but they will not come back if they travel there and get stranded.
We were stuck in Farmingdale with no live music and the other options were too far to get to. Not good!
It's been a rough summer financially and otherwise. I need blues and it ain't happenin enough lately.
I'm jonesin.
I heard the IBC won't be until October (Brightwaters Inn) but I am going to be doing my diligence and trying
to keep it happening.
Won't you join me?
Check out something this week and this weekend and drag someone with you.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
