Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
Recently I have been enjoying the more ethereal sounds of jazz, slow blues and instrumentals,
Bobby Sexton, Giovanni Von Essen, Kerry Kearney, to name a few locally.
I also just purchased Ronnie Earl and The Broadcasters, Spread the Word. Earl is an instrumentalist (guitar)
and he manages to keep it interesting with a guitar and a band and clever playing. There are varied cuts on the cd and so
far it's a great listen. I have been enjoying Mr.Sexton for similar reasons although they are in different worlds. Both
good.
Last weekend I popped in on Clawfoot with Brother Dave, John Judd and Mike Verni at McBrides in Bellmore.
The guitar guys (Dave and Judd) both make it interesting in different ways. Brother Dave an agile player, more pastoral
but not really and Judd more the blues rocker with a mercurial vein, again, both good. It's a good display of blues guitar with
slightly different voices.
The coming weekend includes a Wednesday night, Thanksgiving eve to enjoy some music as well as
the weekend. That's a busy night. Take in a show and enjoy!
I will be out of town for a few days so if there are any late adds to the calendar feel free to send
them to Wally Rohr (facebook and Brightwaters Inn) and Wally may be able to get them posted same day like I try to do.
In any case have a peaceful and Happy Thanksgiving and as always, thanks for checking in!
The last week was more work and life and the gut issues of parenting than entertainment but I
was lucky enough to catch Sunday at Bruno's. I got to Brightwaters Inn for a half-set of Phil Varca on Saturday
night but even the ferocious blues guitar of Mr. V was not enough to rouse my innards that day or perhaps it was
too late and I was just too tired...
The IBC (International Blues Competition/Long Island winners) Fundraiser on Sunday (11/14) featured Kerry
Kearney and Frank Latorre Coalition and Chrissie O'Dell & One Hot Mess. It offered various combinations of all of them
including a few cameo's by Tommy Keys (awesome).
The collaborations were rich. One Hot Mess drummer Papa John and bass player Craig Costa were a style
fit for Kearney and Latorre for a few numbers. The "folksy" element was richly present and the resulting mix was pure
down home blues with a sweet Kearney guitar pouring over it like maple syrup. Kearney & Latorre also made
a rich sound as a duo and all in all it was a good show of a sort of northeastern country blues.
From the same vein Chrissie O'Dell and the One Hot Mess men and women followed for a set of their
originals and a cover or two. Their blues genre felt like it was of the same world and the performances were gritty
sincere and strong as always. It's got high levels of that low luster appeal, the kitchen table wisdom and
truthfullness and the songs are so well written.
The full room at Bruno's appreciated the event. There were camera's flashing throughout, enthusiastic responses and
I assume the funds raised were good for the first event. It was a pleasure to have a show like that to enjoy and I am
sure the talent we send to Memphis will be appreciated.
The local scene is always evolving and thats good. The Wednesday nights at Terry G's with Bobby Sexton that
I worked so hard to develop is done as is Terry G's apparently. But there are weekly jams popping up always, good players
finding weeknight homes and Big Daddy's in Massapequa is beginning a jazz brunch with some good players.
If you like some top notch blues guitar there is the new collaboration Clawfoot with John Judd and Brother
Dave. They are on the slate this weekend. There's a late night show at Big Daddy's with the Electrix... always groovy. Trick
Bag is a well kept secret as well. Hopefully they will have a room full of good people at Toomey's in Amityville.
Thanks for sending me gigs ya'll. I get out every chance I get which isn't near enough for my taste but
I'm still diggin it.
Summer is gone. My home is buried in leaves. The weather is brisk and fall is upon us. This has it's
advantages as cool weather makes for cozy sleeping and the warmer clothes are more enjoyable to wear. As an east-coaster for
now most of my life this is the best time of year. It brings about a different mood for me... more sedate than summer perhaps.
Last Wednesday night I again enjoyed Bobby Sexton and Co at Terry G's, Farmingdale. The trio with Papa
G and Eric Haft make some rich and melodic creations and they had some excellent company with vocalists Christine Sweeney,
Giovanni von Essen and Sweet Suzi. Bobby Sexton is refreshing on guitar with clear and clever articulation. It keeps
me interested and I am enjoying the hell out of that.
The weekend was rich as well. On Friday I headed east to Bobbique's in Patchogue for The Dashboard Saints.
I have posted them numerous times and I knew the cast was excellent but hearing is believing.
Kerry Kearney with Mario Stoiano, Sly Geralds and FL Lombardo (keys) were an exotic mix of blues and other
elements and they were joined by Adam Tese on sax and Ken Korb on harp. That was an enjoyable show and I don't know
why I was surprised given the talent but I was jolted by seeing/hearing them together in a band. The mix with KK's "gravy"
(as in "smooth as") blues, Sly's funk, Mario's grit and the more abstract addition of Lombardo was tasty. The music had
all kinds of facets. I look forward to more of that.
And for my final show of the previous week I caught Chrissie O'Dell & One Hot Mess playing at Candy's
Magic Pub in Shirley. It was a birthday event and the band was hired by the family.
It was a nice setting in a good size room, with nice folks and great food. (Thank you for that by the way).
CO & OHM are a real tight act and they deliver an upbeat and entertaining performance of original
music that is now as familiar to me as covers... having heard it in so many outlets lately.
Chrissie brings a sense of humor to life's trials and makes it a fun ride. One Hot Mess is equally unpretentious
and musically they deliver some real home cookin blues. It was a treat and a real comfort to be with them again.
I had every intention of topping off my weekend with a stop at the Blue Matter jam at Brightwaters
Inn (I heard it was amazing!) but a stop at home proved fatal as far as continuing my escapes for the weekend.
It was a promising week with more good stuff and there's more to come this weekend. Check out the calendar
and take in something new or something different ... but take in something and enjoy.
My ongoing search for inspiration is a hilly, winding road.
Last week began a personal effort to create a quality Wednesday night of music closer to home. There has
been a void near the county lines and although I have been enjoying my occasional trips to Harvey's and Jessies and Bliss
and Painters I have been hankering for something close so I don't always have to travel.
The first week of Bobby Sexton at Terry G's was sweet. Mr. Sexton with his jazzy guitar was joined last
Wednesday night by Papa G on bass and Eric Haft on drums. Mr. Haft was about as articulate as I have heard on
drums. He was delicate, expressive joyful and contained. The trio was inspiring and a nice little crowd enjoyed some tasty funky
jazz. I look forward to the coming week and I recommend you try that one soon.
The weekend was busy with so many peripheral issues but I was determined to get out on Saturday after a
busy week.
Even though it was a typically late start I had time for a few stops beginning with Giacomo Jacks in Amity
for the 'Blue Matter" jam. This time it was Arty Panico and Tim Smith but that was it for the Blue Matter cast. The Halloween
eve show and jam included Jim Moran, funky Tim and Fred P on keys, Clem Allen, Johnny Cola and some other unfamiliar
but good players. It turned out to be a fun gathering of good friends and players and some stimulating blues. I was pleasently
surprised by the vibe and the synergy and it turned out to be a fine show.
I split a little early to catch Andy Aledort at the Viking which is always a favorite of mine. Aledort plays
as pure a Hendrix and blues rock riff as anyone and he was on fire the whole time I was there.
I hung out as long as I could as I needed to milk my moments of inspiration as long as possible. It ended
up being a good week of music and I am encouraged by events in the coming week. Stay tuned.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you out there.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
