Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
It's the end of another year. That means soon I will be announcing my Billfoolery awards. It's not
all that prestigious but at least the winners will have a token of appreciation for their efforts.
It has been a year of change here on Long Island. Numerous venues have closed and some popular local bands
have "reorganized" (Sweet Suzi, Kerry Kearney) and a few local players have hit the national blues charts (Chrissie
O'Dell, JP Blues, Tommy Keys) and I have expanded my palate to include some jazz.
There have been memorable personal events for many of us and it's been a difficult economy for the
most part but there is always live music and music on the radio and on the web now so there is always a source of solace.
That's something I need and thanks again for the live stuff from those of you here.
The coming year will bring some new venues hopefully and some new names and faces, new achievements, new
music and hopefully more moments of truth and inspiration. It comes with the bad and the difficult but it
will come. Thank god.
My Christmas won't be so bad. The last few were doozies for me but there has been some stabilization
and all's well here in the "Foolery" household. I can't say I am keeping up with the accepted commercial expectations
of the American version of the holiday but I am able to put something together including some semblance of peace in my mind.
So, Ho Ho Ho!
That being said, I am moved to mention how Christmas is not a bundle of Happy expectations for everyone
and in many cases it is a difficult time.
I have a number of friends and aquaintences who, for very good reasons, have a very full plate of bitter pills.
Some people have sets of rules that have brought discomforting sets of circumstances and people must abide by their
sets of rules. All of us.
Bad relationships may have been terminated. Good decision perhaps but a difficult outcome
for the holidays.
A deeply felt artistic expression and creation which may have taken great strength and resourcefullness
takes even greater strength to pay the price. This is the stuff that makes blues, and many other forms of artistic expression.
Many artists and principle holders struggle with the holidays for these reasons. I am okay with our
American system ...which works this way. Without the risks and without the pain and without the price, the level of expression
would suffer. That which comes forth has substance and that which rises to the top reverberates with something relevant.
If you are able to feel joy this Christmas be grateful. If not then remember that you made the difficult
choices but very possibly good ones and your good Christmas will come one way or another.
Maybe it's a good time to celebrate the dynamics of the system and He who created that.
It was a different week of music for me. In my search for a new Wednesday night home for some small
ensembles I have been trying out some new spots. Any venue owners interested in hosting a weekly night of blues and/or jazz
three piece (duet and quartet also) ensembles please let me know (bill@billfoolery.com).
My travels took me to The Homestead on Wednesday night for Jazzaphonic with Frank Bellucci (drums) and a
good collection of jazz players (keys, sax, elec bass, drums). I'll get more names asap.. I got there late and only caught
a few numbers but it was some interesting music and some good players.
After that I trucked all the way to E Meadow and could not find Jakes in a reasonable amount of tries. (
I later found out I passed it once or twice, doh!) I called it a night. Luckily I had some good stuff (Ronie Earl
and Miles Davis) in the cd player for all the freaking driving.
For the weekend I had part of Saturday night and I decided to catch some Stevie Cochran at Paradox
Cafe in Farmingdale. I caught the last set and SC with Mark Mancini and Frank Anstice sounded good for a few tunes.
There was time for one more stop so I headed to Irish Cottage in Massapequa and caught a few tunes of Chic
n Martini and friends which included Steve Robinson. and Carrie McQuade. It was a good show especially for a late night, last
stop.
Sunday I celebrated the Holidays with Long Island Blues Society at Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue.
LIBS put on a nice party with good food, Josey Wales (Jim Kolman) hosting an excellent day-long jam
and a lot of good and friendly faces. A good time was had by all in attendance.
Check out some live music in the coming weeks and keep your spirits high. It's easy to forget
that it's a time for joy and celebration.
It's the Holiday season for sure. It comes on like a meteor from space first being sighted
before Thanksgiving. It is out there and we know it's coming but it isn't iminent until black Friday and then we must
prepare as the momentum builds and people start panicking. There is shopping to be done and preparations must be made to the
house and plans must be made for the coming weeks and months.... for the Event.
Fortunately we have music. However frantic my days and weeks become I get to go out on
Wednesday nights and once or twice on weekends to unwind and find some sanity. There has been a hearty culture of music
around here and there is a lot to go to. Some of my favorite Wednesday night spots have closed and some of my favorite
players aren't always working on the nights I want but it's out there in good numbers and with some good energy.
I had a fun week attending Behind Closed Doors at Bobbique's last Friday. The place was packed for a good
cause and the music was hot. BA Fagerland put on a heartfelt performance as did Diane McArdle in a supporting role and the
boys in the band, and a good number of friends, raised the roof. That's a good bunch of people and they make good music
for the right reasons.
I was very lucky to have a second night last weekend and I took in a whole night of the Blue Matter
gang at the Brightwaters Inn. It was the First Saturday jam and the originals were all there (except Kelly, who was
missed) and some of the good ole' guys who have been stepping in for a lot of years.
Arty Panico, Ray Wade, Ralph Santiago, Tim Smith, Jim Moran, Funky Tim, Charlie Labs, Clem Allen, John on bass,
Sweet Suzi and lots more. It was good bunch of local blues folks puttin on a much needed night of some down home (Long
Island) blues. That felt good!
The coming weekend features a number of Holiday party's including the Long Island Blues Society event on
Sunday and Pam Betti Band has one Sat in Ronk... and there's lots more.
Stay cool with some cool music this season and remember whats important.. to you.
A trip to Florida for Thanksgiving gave me a much needed opportunity to read and listen to some music. Things
as simple as that are hard to accomplish in the day to day happenings.
Some music I have been enjoying along with the Ronnie Earl cd that I mentioned in my last post are
the new Albert Castiglia cd, Keepin On and some Miles Davis music that I bought (MP3's on Amazon). It's a diverse array but
it's about the instrumental expression in most cases lately and it serves different moods.
Keepin On (Castiglia; Blues Leaf Records) has some of the higher energy stuff that I like in guitar
blues but Castiglia stays above the fray with good melody and writing. Pieces like Closing Time offer feel
and some gritty blue guitar. Goin Upstairs is a cool ride too.
Blues guitar is a crowded pool but I seek (and find) players that have something to say and that
I "hear". I have been moving from Castiglia to Earl with my mood and with the time of day and then to some Miles Davis
lately at night.
In my holiday travels to the land of grandparents and palm trees I had ample time to devour Miles;
the autobiography of Miles Davis.
Not having a history with jazz I was more interested in the artist but I could not help but become intrigued
with the music after "living" in Mr. Davis's shoes as he matured musically along side Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gilespie and
many more from the 40's to the 80's. The stories of musicianship and lifestyle and band management and life lessons brought
me inside the music and helped me follow the evolution and appreciate the content. It also taught me more nuance
of instruments including the blues guitar as Davis talked about what he heard in some more contemporary blues artists like
Hendrix and Buddy Miles to mention just a few. He was raised with a lot of blues from the south and from St Louis and
the midwest and although he created jazz he talked about and wrote a lot of blues.
I am enjoying some inter-genre traveling and discovery and I look forward to finding more and to hearing
as much of the local fusions as I can find. So keep on keeping me posted on any and all (over 30 stuff).
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the input... all you who have inputted.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
