Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
My computer is down so ... From my freaking blackberry(and my fingers are too fat) I am on borrowed time and fragile internet
connection. I want to mention some good shows in the past week. Last wednesday (1/19)I caught jazzaphonic w frank
belucci, bill heller, wayne schuster(sax) and a mr. Cammack at the homestead. It was some quality jazz and worth the trip
to oyster bay. As for the weekend I caught a set of net prophets at biddy spratts w adam tese and chris cangelosi; two
talented guys but I'm not sure the young crowd appreciated it. We split for madisons in hauppauge and caught prentiss mcneil
and co.. Mr p has a colorful cast and cool blue suit. He also had a good saxman in rodney goff and it was some rich vox and
r&b. Some good stuff out there and more comin w new jams. Check it out. Oh yeah, vote on ur favorites from 2010!
Gotta go, can't take typing on this thing. Thanks ya'll.
In the midst of the crappiest winter weather I can remember I am needing good music more than ever. Waking
up to cold temps and walking out to biting wind or frigid wetness forces me to dig deep for motivation. Rather than
think past the entire day and wish myself home for dinner I have been able to keep smiling with the help of friends and good
music... some nice local jobs has helped too.
Musically I found gold in the past week beginning with a rare Thursday night at Wickers in Hicksville. I
just so happened to be meeting a friend in the area and I caught the premier show/jam featuring Perrita Kitson (vocals), Al
Cardillo (upright bass), Bill Heller(keys) amd Frank Bellucci (drums).. That ensemble made some beautiful music and the cast
of musicians joining in was also excellent. I heard "Juanita" doing some "pop, classical" vocals and Melody Rose
also joined in with some sweet vocals . One young and one mature and both a joy. That's a regular
event and that makes Thursday nights even harder to choose.
The weekend was busy but I got to enjoy a few shows on Sunday beginning with the fundraiser for Kerry
Kearney/Frank Latorre Coalition and Chrissie O'Dell & One Hot Mess hosted by Long Island Blues Society.
The event was well attended and as always there was a festive mood and an appreciative audience. I
am confused by the lack of attendance by so many other area artists especially since many have been in the same situation
and others will be in the future but there were a good number of talented compadres and fans
there and it was an excellent show.
Kerry Kearney and Frank Latorre won the solo/duo competition last fall and as a couple of seasoned blues
artists they put on a a good show. They are always a pleasure to listen to and it was a good show on Sunday.
Chrissie O'Dell & One Hot Mess (winners of the band competition) followed and the down-home, original
music blues band put on a dynamite performance also. Chrissie O was joined by Papa John on drums, John Bendy on guitar, Craig
Costa on bass, Billy Quinn on keys, Nancy Bahnsen and filling in for Libby C was Franny Mae; the two on back
up vocals.
With a first set of now often-played singles they showed why the band is currently #1 in NY on the blues
charts and doing well nationally. (as high as #3). It was fun day and a great show.
I had yet another opportunity on Sunday night so I headed to the Open Mic at Brickhouse Brewery with Jim
Kolman.
That was another good show. The cast of players is always good but it's been a while for me and I enjoyed
it. Mr. Kolman was joined by so many but the players included Tru Doty Jay Sharkey, Tim Smith, JD Leonard, Karen Kateridge, Jim
Moran, Chrissie O'Dell, Freddy Piscop, Frankie G, Ed Canova and many more. I also heard a new performer and a good
one, Satchell Boogie (vocals/guitar).
So another winter week marches on and I hope you find some time to take in some live music. Many of these
folks rely on this for actual money and I rely on them for entertainment so keep on going out. Got that?
Thanks for checking in and thanks for keeping me posted on events. I am trying to have everything here for
the over-30 crowd (Nassau/Suffolk) and I appreciate your help.
Finally I got to Spices in Baldwin for the Wednesday night jam. Last week the host was Ajax Bernard and
the cast was good. Ajax is a congenial and colorful host and horn payer. The cast included Debbie Troy Miles (vocalist)
and a good cast of blues/r&b players.
Spices is easy to get to (just off the Southern State on Grand Ave) and it's my kind of room with lots of
tables, wait service a well attended bar and a stage for good sightlines for easy viewing. There was a nice crowd too.
Check that out for a night of some dynamite music. The hosts rotate and this week is Debbie Knapper and Knappertime. Debbie
K is a seasoned entertainer/guitar player and jam host. You won't be disappointed.
This past weekend was some good times for me with some of my oldest favorites starting with SmokinGun
Band at McBrides in Bellmore.
SGB still delivers some rockin blues with Bill Marino, Jeannie B and Rich Theil. McBrides is a good
size room with boothsand a bar and they serve some tasty food. It's actually a good location right near the Bellmore train
station and close to KJ Farrells also. Unfortunately the show started late that night due to the Jets (amazing) game against
the Colts. I was able to hang for a set and then off to the Blue Matter show and Julianne Noto's birthday bash in Brightwaters.
When I do finally get out these days I try to maximize my time and I make too many promises. I spend almost
as much time driving as I do taking in music but I am happy to be out.
It was a good time at Toddler House too. Blue Matter with Arty Panico, Ray Wade, Ralph Santiago, Charlie
Labs and Tim Smith are crowd pleasers and they always open it up to a jam. In this case they and Ms.Noto
attracted Ms. Pam Betti and Frank C, Sweet Suzi, John Haseth and many more. It was a festive night and as usual
I missed much of that. I caught some good stuff later on with Jim Kolman and others.
The calendar this week has some special stuff. Chrissie O'Dell & One Hot Mess are making an appearance
at a Fundraiser with Kerry Kearney/Frank Latorre Coalition (Sunday) as they raise funds for their IBC events in Memphis.
These are some dynamite acts and if you like some genu-wine blues this is it.
Sweaty Betty has a big show at Bobbique's on Friday. Ms. Diane McArdle and Co. bring the tempo up
a few notches and get the party going and Bobbique's is one of the best venues around with lip smackin food.
Another good lookin show this weekend is Breakaway at Stone Turtle in Island Park (Saturday). These guys
perform original stuff and they rock... and it's blues. This one is a "Rock n Roll Party" and a good bet.
So there's some quality stuff for you. If you like the local music you can express you favorites right here
with the 2010 Vote for favorites (click the Vote link). I will keep the vote open until I get a good
number of votes. I want to get a relevant sample and I am almost there. Take a minute and pick some favorites. I jot down
the picks you send and delete the e-mails. I don't care if you vote for your boyfriend or girlfriend who can't play a
lick. It's all about your favorites and I don't judge no body!
Thanks for checking in people and take in something live this weekend.
It's been a good week for music here on Long Island. I hope it is a sign of things to come.
My last Wednesday night began with a stop at KJ Farrells in Bellmore for Wonderous Wednesday with Kenny
Forgione and Wonderous Stories. There was a nice crowd . KJ Farrells is a good size room with what feels like a low ceiling.
It seems a little close but intimate and I felt personal with the players. There are tables with decent sightlines
and a nice setting.
We caught a set and a half of some good classic stuff including Yes and other Brit rock and blues covers.
The quality of music was great. Kenny Forgione has been putting on rock shows for years and he gets a nice crowd.
I am always looking for blues (and jazz lately) and I forget that there are some really good rock shows goin on. There is
now a Monday night jam there with Kenny F and Steve Interrante. Check that out too.
After that it was time to catch the last jam at Jessies Roadhouse (the place was just sold) and there was
a stellar crowd of players joining Joe Vicino. We arrived to a set of Andy Aledort jamming with Joe V and Gail Storm
joined in. Don Celenza was on hand ... and many more. It was a treat and it made for an unforgettable Wednesday night.
Now the challenge is to make more magic happen on Wednesdays. I am still on the lookout for a venue for
two to four piece blues and jazz ensembles. Terry G's closed up after we had just got it going in Farmingdale.
There are other great nights of music but my schedule is made for Wednesdays and I am determined to find
a new home.
In an effort to try something new I just finished putting together a lengthy list of candidates for "Favorites"
for 2010. I will be posting the list for you to vote for your favorites for the past year. In the past I chose my own favorites
but the list is now so large it is hard to choose and I'd rather everyone take the heat for having to choose just a few favorites
out of so many good musicians.
It is a lengthy list as I tried to include all "working" artists and venues for the past year. I will be
putting it up in the next day or so so feel free to send in your favorites.
Thanks for stopping by and come back soon to take part in offering some kudos to some of our local talent.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
