Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
I have been spending a lot more time lately looking for things to soothe my soul. I have been
looking hard for good live music and in other places.
I have found some but I have also been getting downed out by people for some sour attitudes. It seems
a lot of folks like to judge people and that's something I have no patience for. Can anyone who judges people really stand
being judged themselves?
Do people really think there is only one way to be and one way to react and one way to feel? And is their
way the right way? Really?! Can no one see that other people have figured some things out on their own and that there are
other conclusions and other realities and things these judgers just don't know?
Well the bigness and smallness of people never ceases to surprise me I guess. I just figure
everyone will understand or try to and that's pretty much all it would take to elliminate most of the turmoil in people's
lives.
As for my searches for music and inspiration I have had some good efforts.
I stopped in on Al Cardillo and friends at Wickers last Thursday night. I had a rare, last minute opportunity
and I headed up there. Perrita Kitson and Mr. Cardillo (bass) and some other fine vocalists and players made some cool jazz,
like they advertise. I was with some new friends and I got a bit distracted by the fine company but it was a good show. Perrita
Kitson has some smooth pipes. Check that one out.
For the weekend I had only a late opportunity on Saturday night and I got late word of Debbie Knapper
and Co at a new place in Amity, The High Note. It's the old Candlelight Cabaret right in the village of Amityville.
Debbie Knapper had some good players but I wanted to hear her guitar playing. She always has a good cast of players and
there were some good ones but her playing is some quality blues and R&B and funk.
The High Note is an excellent room. There's a good size stage and lots of tables and a good size bar with
a fun staff. The place is made for music and I like the location; on the county line.
That was pretty much it for the week, musically speaking. There's a lot on the calendar this week though
and I am hopeful of getting out for more.
I have the totals and feedback of the votes for the favorite local artists and thank you
so much to those who voted. I appreciate feedback and input and it helps me know more about what and who to focus on for your
entertainment.
I have a nice award designed and I will be offering them as soon as I can get them made. I am
a craftsman and I would like to make them myself but that may be hard.
Have an excellent week and thanks for stopping by.
I am slowly getting back to my old routine with a night or two of some music every week.
This past week I caught F&G Blues at Bobbique's in Patchogue. That's a nice place to catch some blues
especially if you're hungry. I had a little side of some wings and collard greens and enjoyed Edlene Hart's vocals with Sly
and Company. They mixed in some funk and other variations but I like Ms. Harts and the bands blues sound the best. She has
a rich deep voice with a flavorful tone. F&G can be heard in Long Beach this weekend. Check the schedule for that and
other offerings.
I also was lucky enough to get to The Viking for Andy Aledort late Saturday night. Andy A was joined by
Joe Vicino for the set and half that I heard and the two turned in some dynamite performances covering some Allmans and
Hendrix. For that genre it doesn't get any better. Good live performances inspire no matter how many times I have heard the
tune and those were some good ones.
I try to put out a good calendar of over-30 live music for Nassau and Suffolk. I don't always have time for
the other stuff but I post what I can and when I can. If you know of shows that are not posted here please feel free
to send them to me (bill@billfoolery.com) and please send me your gigs in those parameters.
I expect there will be other calenders if there aren't already but stay tuned as I will be slowly but surely
upgrading my site with more features and more marketing. I have been lucky enough to experience steady growth over the years
in terms of numbers but I will be stepping that up more with some advertising both for my site and on my site. Feel free to
get in touch if you have any interest in sponsoring Billfoolery.com and promoting your business with an ad and if you have
any expertise in marketing websites and perhaps we can work something out.
In the meantime thanks for stopping by and keep checking in for all your live music information. Enjoy!
In the past month I have had all kinds of bummer circumstances from moving (again) to throwing out my back
two days before the move, to falling on my bum shoulder, to losing my media services, to slicing off part of my finger...
and the stresses of money issues the whole time.. Oh yeah, I was on jury duty call the past week and I had to finish installing
a kitchen or not have the money I need to pay all kinds of bills. The arctic weather and dark, dark skies were the perfect
setting for a difficult spell. I was stymied from going out for much of the time and the funk was taking over my psyche.
I would crawl into bed plug my iPod into my ear with spasm'ing back, bad shoulder and thumb
bandaged like a plum and "drift away" into some Ronnie Earl or Miles Davis. That was my solace other then the love and support
of my unusually helpful teenage daughter when we were trudging boxes from one house to the other in the weeks prior and after
the weekend move.
I finally saw some light. That may be due to the first sunny day in seemingly ages but also because it was
a Wednesday and I had a little energy to get out for some jamming and comradship. I popped in on the first jam with Papa G
(Glen Palermo) and Sweet Suzi at Paradox Lounge in Farmingdale (every other Wed). It was a good turnout with Sly Geralds,
Mike Ernst, Funky Tim, Arty Panico, Hector Lopez, some trumpet players (didn't get the names), Clem Allen and more. I enjoyed
the salt-of-the-earth type vibe from the music and the cast. I felt like I was back on a track of some kind; like there was
still a beat out there and I just had to reconnect.
The weekend offered one night out and I caught Felix Cabrera (harp, vox)with Brother Dave on axe, Papa G
on bass and Ralphie Santiago on drums at Stone Turtle in Island Park. That was my first trip in there and I liked the place;
nice staff and crowd and an open room with couches and coffee tables as well as restaurant tables.
Felix Cabrera offers some real bluesy harmonica but not too down in vibe. The gritty guitar of Dave was
a good style fit and the funky bass of G with Santiago's upbeat sound made a good mix. It came together well for many of the
numbers. I enjoyed that and it was a rare bright spot and I am glad I chose to make it a real Saturday night in spite of all
my challenges.
This is not to assume I have more challenges than you. I am just someone who finds an answer in blues music
and I enjoy sharing that. It could do more for more people if we can get the word out.
Thanks for the help and support of some friends and family who helped in numerous ways. And I feel
bad that I was late in posting the schedule this week. I had no media access for a little while and that was a bad thing.
All is well again and I am looking forward to getting out more as as soon as I can walk straight again. In the
meantime I am taking in some cd's I have been turned onto recently. I got an original cd of Skip Bemet who plays a Delta-style
blues guitar and jams every week in suffolk. I am just sinking my teeth into that. I have been hearing some bits and pieces
of Gary Sellers new cd and I am going to try and get some more. I have also been enjoying Albert Castiglia's new stuff.
So thanks for checking in and keeping me posted and I will try and do the same.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
