Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
It's spring break week and I have been able to take in some different nights and different locations due
to no school for my teenager and a light work week for myself.
Last week I stopped in at Bartini for the double bill of Jay Scott and Rorie Kelly. It was a bad weather
night and I got a late start from Bay Shore. Babylon is close and I have not caught Ms. Kelly yet.
I still haven't caught Ms. Kelly as I missed her act due to late arrival but I caught a set of Jay Scott with
"Po" boy Reinhart and Co and they offered a tasty kind of folk/rock. It was a good vibe on a rainy night and Dave Drew
keeps on offering his own world of eclectic artists. It's always interesting stopping at Bartini and always a nice group of
people.
I had another chance but I missed again as I invited some friends including Chrissie O'Dell to The High
Note in Amity for the Debbie Knapper jam. I wanted to hear the real deal vocals of Ms. Chrissie with the rhythmy/bluesy Knapper
and Co. The only problem was that I had a curfew due to driving Miss teen and everything happened after I had to depart. I
hear it was a good mix and I am hopeful of hearing that combination again at another one of Ms. Knapper's jams.
For the real highlight of my last week I ventured into the large apple for the jam at Bitter End with Richie
Cannata and Jim Moran and Co. I had to do all kinds of planning and bribing to make arrangements for the kid but
I pulled it off and enjoyed an all-nighter of blues and other types of live music.
The Bitter End on Monday night was a full house with all kinds of happenings. The night opened with a set
of JD Leonard Band doing a cameo performance and JD showcased a full set of impressive skills with guitar and vocals
and he had a nice group of back up performers including Karen Kateridge supplying some nice vocals of her own.
We took leave after Mr. Leonard and Co. to sneak over to Big Ed's Blues jam at the Grisly Pear only a few
blocks away and were surprised to find Papa Chubby hosting with guests including Gina Sicilia (vocals) and Dave
Gross on guitar. I was in a small group with Ms. Chrissie O'Dell again and Ms. O'Dell got up and belted out 29 Ways with some
nice accompaniment. The group in the room knew Ms. O'Dell and enjoyed the performance.
Papa Chubby rocked as well as did Gina Sicilia, Dave Gross and company and that was a memorable
set. We high-tailed it back to the Bitter End for a full night of some eclectic jam collaborations.
The cast there included Jim Moran of course, Dave Nesdall playing some sharp guitar and Cannata and friends
tearing it up with an array of vocalists that ran the gamut from young and sweet to bluesy and salty.
There wasn't a bad moment and it was stimulating to be in another enviornment with a new set of players.
I look forward to more trips to Manhattan and to other places but I have to say I can find great stuff here
on the island even if I ahve to drive a half hour sometimes.
The coming weekend has some great stuff. Check it out and keep on keeping me posted with all your good stuff.
Thanks again for stopping by.
My last weeks entertainment consisted mostly of jams (open mics).
My Saturday evening was at Jim Moran's open mic at Maggies in W Babylon. The cast was excellent with
Jim Moran of course (this time on bass) and guest vocalists Chrissie O'Dell and Giovanni Von Essen. The two made for
a special set of mixed female vocals; O'Dell with some classic blues and Von Essen did some classic jazz takes. Other
players included Rich Johnson on guitar and vocals who lit up a few numbers.
Sunday I had a rare opportunity to go to a jam and I headed to Ed the Hat with Jim Moran and JD Leonard
at Coyles in Massapequa.
That was my first trip there and the place was buzzin. The cast included Chrissie O'Dell again who was in for
the weekend, Karen Kateridge, also hot on vocals, some cool keys by Billy Quinn and Charlie Labs and some excellent
guitar by Russell Hitman Alexander and others. I caught Frankie G on drums at one the jams last week and I enjoyed his
upbeat style as well. Even if you miss some of the good bands like Buttered Soul you can catch some of the players at
the jams. They offer excellent entertainment and they never get boring when the casts are so diverse.
The coming weekend has a full slate and again there are too many shows to choose from.
If you like dinner and a show you have Bobby Sexton at Sayville Inn. Bobby S is one of my favorite
guitar players. It's a jazzy show with entertaining instrumental tunes.
You can also catch Danny Kean with Don Celenza and Phil Bloom at Sonoma Grill in Holbrook. By the way, Danny
and Friends also have a show at Harveys Lounge in Cedarhurst; a cool room.
Joe Vicino (Shore Thing) and Andy Aledort are on the same ticket on Saturday night and now you can
catch Debbie Knapper and her great jams at The High Note in Amity on Fridays.
Another new event is the Well Diggers with Rich Lanahan at Giacomo Jacks. Thats a cool country thing with
some good guitar and their first gig at Giacs I believe.
Keep checking it out and keep stopping by here and thanks again for patronizing live music. It keeps things
real.
I spend a lot of time talking about local musicians and attending shows and hanging with some players as
well. I have heard many of those that perform on Long Island and some I have heard many times. I still enjoy
most of the shows I attend and there are always more on the calendar than I can get to. We have many talented and inspired
blues, jazz and other artists and many are working for part of their livelihood and some for all of it.
Yet it is hard to find any coverage of the local music scene. The difference it would make if Newsday
or even LI Press or the Times gave just a weekly mention of the local scene would be enormous. Much of the conversation among
fellow musicians is about how to fill a room or how much to ask for in case the room doesn't fill or do they dare book a room
without many publicity outlets. The venues don't always promote and they expect the bands to bring the crowd.
It is a difficult situation with a tough economy and tough drinking/driving campaigns going on. The promotion
aspect is like greek to many artists so I am hoping someone in the greater media outlets reads this and begins a campaign
to cover local live music. It's a colorful scene. I do what I can here and eventually I will become more commercial as my
budget grows with my numbers but that will take a little more time.
Some of my recent excursions have included the Wednesday night jam at Paradox Cafe in Farmingdale with Papa
G, Uncle Eric and Hector Lopez. Sweet Suzi is also present in numerous capacities including hostess. That jam gets a good
mix of funk, blues and jazz artists and I like that it has an eclectic cast and a very open and forgiving attitude. Farmingdale
is conveniently located (Paradox is on Motor Ave south of 109 off Main St.).
I have a few shows on my radar for the coming weekend. There is a Breast Cancer benefit at Biddy Spratts
on Friday with a great cast which I will be visiting. (see the poster above the calendar).
Many of my favorite local acts are playing including King Cobras (catchy blues), SmokinGun (rockin blues),
Dashboard Saints (new blues), Danny Kean and Donnie C (rhythm, funk and blues) not to mention all the cool jazz (Shenole
Latimer on Friday and Al Cardillo most nights.
Check out something live this weekend and if you know anyone in media give them an earful of the poor coverage
around here. And spread the word yourself.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
