Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
My last few weeks have provided some good moments in inspiring entertainment.
I stopped in to see Don Celenza and The South Street Band at Harvey's a week ago. Harvey' is a bit
of a ride (Cedarhurst) but it's a cozy room and the music is always good. This time the room was packed with family and friends
as the Celenza family suffered a death in the family. I was glad to see that Don was present and in fact he seemed tuned
into his playing. I imagine it was cathartic for him that night because as well as sounding sharp on both keys and guitar
Don ended a set with a soulful rendition, dedicated to his late brother, of Jeff Beck's, "Cause We've ended as Lovers". His
guitar playing can be as good as anyone's and that was a good moment.
As a fan of instrumentalists like Ronnie Earl and Miles and others I appreciate the soul of a guitar instrumental.
I sometimes have a hard time hearing lyrics sometimes so when I can take in the vibe of an artist with an instrument
I can hear the message of emotion. That's what inspires me to find music. It brings people together and validates
the wounds we carry.
As for the workweek I got stranded on Wednesday night so I had only my digital world to enjoy. When
I can't get out and I need to feel that tie to the universe I turn to music and some recent cd purchases like Albert
Castiglia's Keepin On kept me in tune and above the fray.
I had a busy weekend just passed but I need to do some homework on names, etc. Stay tuned and thanks for
stopping by.... and thanks for the gig information.
Wednesday nights have been a mixed bag in the last year for jams and open mics. Venues have closed,
jams have ended and some have moved and some have popped up of late.
I have found some good jazz at Dunton Inn in Bayville which I have talked about recently and I stopped in
at Joe Vicino's jam now at Sunset Grill a few times recently.
The cast has been unbeatable with players like Andy Aledort, Chrissie O'Dell, Adam Tese, Craig Hopping and Dave
Nesdall to name a few. There have been some players I enjoyed who I do not know and many more good ones that I do know. Seaford
is a good location, close to Suffolk and in western Nassau.(on Sunrise Hwy). It is good to see a good size room drawing a
good crowd on a weeknight and they play some blues!
I attended the Blue Matter jam on Saturday night and it was another good jam. With a big cast of players
generally unfamiliar with each other the song lists don't stray too far from rock and some blues rock however. It's been good
stuff there as well but I am, as always, looking for the bluesy or the jazzy/bluesy or some soulful stuff. I see some good
opportunities in the coming weekend with Blue Roots at Bobbique's and The Last Interntaionale (call that soulful alternative
rock) and some good benefit events on Sunday.
I like whats out there and I am glad to see the calendar is full and eclectic. Thanks for the input and
thats for visiting and thanks for the cool music.
I didn't think I had much to share with the public on Mothers Day. I consider it a private appreciation
for the sacrifices all mothers make as did mine. After further consideration I decided to share my experience as it highlights
an excellent mother and the urgency of out fights against cancer.
My mother raised six children (in a seven year age span) with the help of a busy working husband who supplied
the means and a stoic, admirable, reliable role model.
My mother was a full-time mom and she took the job seriously. We were taught that there were few limits
in life and we could aim for the stars. Discipline was important. Religion was important to her as well but that lesson
was lost a bit after the elementary Catholic doctrine showed its depths (or lack of) as we outgrew adolescence.
For the record, the basic premise was not lost on us all so her religious efforts were not in vain.
Many details were managed by my mother from etiquette to diet to hygiene to life goals. Being
that my father was working and largely absent I learned many of those lessons from her while raised among four sisters and
an older and largely absent brother.
While this is not an uncommon story of upbringing on post-war Long Island I mention it because from this
familial background I feel I am uniquely equiped for what life brought me in my parental career.
I married and we had a daughter in 1994. Soon after the birth my wife developed breast cancer and tragically
we lost Kathy in 1996.
I was left with the responsibility of raising a daughter. I tried hiring a nanny and continuing my work
in sales but after a few bad experiences with nanny's I decided I had to raise my child myself. I had felt bad that she was
going to be raised by a nanny anyway and not a parent. The decision was not hard but the life was to be honest.
I made a career change so I could work from home and I became a medium for the mother who raised me as I became mother and
father for my daughter..
My daughter is a great kid, not perfect of course. Who is? I am glad for the mother who raised me and that
I followed four sisters so I learned a lot of the things daughters learn from a mother and I learned how women interact. My
daughter will not know the tactile realities of her mother but she will know many maternal legacies from an excellent mother.
Mine.
I recently spent my birthday weekend taking in some local live music and I caught a good variety including blues,
funk and rock.
I first stopped at Giacomo Jacks in Amityville for Snap with Ahmad Ali, Clem Allen and Tim
Dorsey . Snap offers a variety of covers that include funk, R&B and soul. Ahmad Ali (guitar/vocals) is a soul performer/vocalist
in the general sphere of George Benson among others and the band drifts from soul to some funkier Parliament
stuff with Dorsey on vocals and Clem Allen holding it all down. Their stuff is danceable and the place enjoyed it. It
was a fun vibe and as always a fun night at Giacomos.
Saturday night I got a rare early start (Happy Birthday to me) so I went to Jim Moran's jam at Maggies which has
been a popular event lately. I got my blues fix there with Jim on guitar and a good cast including the indominatable vocalist
Chrissie O'Dell, Tim Smith on bass who serenaded with some well done Van Morrison vocals, Jim Kolman who also gave me a gift
of some blues and a nice variety of players and drummers including Steve Sclafani, Joey Inserra, Sparky and Bruce
Dickson. The Saturday afternoon jam ended, as usual, around 8:30 so I pursuaded a small posse to join me for some further
music travels.
Given the location, time, etc we decided to stop in at the Sweaty Betty show at near by Farrells in W Islip.
That place was packed of course. Diane Mc and Co. always get people moving with a nice mix of danceable
rockable bluesy pop. It also helped to have Adam Tese sitting in on sax. Thats a happy formula for entertainment and
Farrells offered a good menu for a quick, affordable and tasty dinner. My little group and I had a busy agenda and
after a fun set with our Sweaty friends in West Islip we headed west for our Birthday finale, Danny Kean and Friends at Stone
Turtle.
We got to Island Park around 11:15 and caught a full set of the funk and rhythm sounds of Danny Kean, Don
Celenza and Phil Bloom.
The Stone Turtle is a fairly new venue right on Austin Blvd. offering original music. The place has lots
of tables and comfy chairs and we met some of our original posse there. We plunked ourselves down in some leather end
enjoyed some of Danny's new originals from the new Danny Kean cd.
It was fine Birthday weekend and I am encouraged by the good variety of stuff around here and the good weather
that visited us this past weekend.
If this is midlife I think I am going to enjoy the second half. Thanks to my friends and all the good people
in the local music industry who are some good and talented people.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
