Welcome to my blog!
This weblog is an online journal. If there
is a "mission" it is to generate interest in the local music scene. I attempt to do that by attending events and talking
about my experiences in occasional posts.. I do not intend to offer criticism .. I am not a musician. I do highlight
those artists that put on a bigger and/or better show and the artists that "move me" more but even those less polished are
offering something to Long Island patrons and I'd like to see more patrons out there enjoying the good local talent.
You will find a log of my few weekly experiences. My "angle"
may be different in some ways, hopefully. I sometimes see things differently. I hope my perceptions offer some
insight on occasion and some humor.
I expect that this conversation will reveal a life that appreciates
blues. I see "blues" as musical-artistic expressions of human conditions.
I also like to provide links to other things on the web that I
find interesting. I will be commenting on the places I go to hear music and the folks I meet. I will be commenting
on the things I see and hear on Long Island and elsewhere. As much as I hate politics I may find it hard to resist commenting
on that too.
This is a personal, creative endeavor so
if there are some mistakes, well, sorry... it's free entertainment. I consider myself something of an impressionist as
it pertains to style. I am human and sometimes speak /write before I think. I can get into
trouble with these extroverted tendencies but thats why this is...what it is... a journal. I hope you find
some useful information or something entertaining on occasion....thanks for being here!!!!
Keep scrolling down for more posts and the Calendar. There is a menu of other pages as well.
Another weekend approaches and I haven't had time to talk about a great time last weekend.
This is the season of festivals and benefits and they are always a good time as multiple acts gather and
bring eclectic audiences. Last week was a benefit for Mario Stoiano at Bobbique's in Patchogue. Mr. Mario has toured the world
and played (drums) with some of the biggest names in blues and rock. More important he has played among Long Islands best
for many years and the gathering last week shows how well both aspects of his career have gone.
The players included an all star cast of locals including Kerry Kearney, Jim Moran, Danny Kean, Don
and Frank Celenza, Bobby Rondinelli, Frank Latorre, Tony Campo, Clutch Reilly, Tracie Robbins, Perrita Kitson, JD Leonard,
Ken Korb, LAW and Sondra, Gary Sellers and on and on. National artists included Roger Earl, Gary "US" Bonds to name a few.
It was one of the most enjoyable days of music I have been to in a long time and not because I won a dobro
guitar (thanks Kerry) in one of the raffles.
Also last weekend I enjoyed some good moments on Friday and Saturday nights.
I stopped in at The Grill Room in Hauppauge again and heard a good long set of Heather Hardy and Joseph
Carter. Ms. Hardy plays a violin (blues) and Mr. Carter a jazzy guitar. The two had a good chemistry playing off each
other and it was a mix of ragtime, jazz, swing and some Hot Tuna. Ms. Hardy, violinist is a former playing partner
with Sam Taylor in Arizona and also has a history in NY. Jos. Carter (TJ Swan) Swan is semi-regular lately
at The Grill Room and Grasso's among other places and I liked the pairing.
I also had some time to run up to Katies in Smithtown for some Pamela Betti Band. The PBB is busy as
always playing at least twice a week and the energy level is always supreme. Pam squeezes every ounce of gut out of herself
and her band which was highlighted by some John Haseth (guitar) and Frank Centrone (keys) solo's.
It was an unusually busy weekend but this time of year it's shame not to take advantage when circumstance
allows.
This weekend is another festival and benefit packed couple of days. Check out the posters above the calendar
and support one or two events and have a good time.
I think of the Savoy Brown tune "Keep on Rollin" a lot in these, my mid-life years. The summer heat is just
another obstacle like the overwhelming snow we had last winter and the rain of spring and well... all the other stuff that
challenges us (kids, work, bills...) The terrain slopes downward soon enough hopefully and when it doesn't thankfully
I have good music to take my mind off the road.
My recent travels included the Grill Room in Hauppauge where some good stuff is always happening. This time
I caught Russell the Hitman with Paul Gilmore; a talented duo. Hitman has a vast repetoire of material from blues, of course,
to covers and Paul was mixing it up with a mandolin and various other stringed equipment. It was a cozy couple of sets in
a nice room.
Afterwards I walked down the the Wobbly Olive Gastropub in the same strip mall to check out the place.
Steve Interrante jams there on Mondays and the new place has been hosting weekend shows as well. It was big, with multi-levels
and a nice feel. Nothing was going on that night but most weekends there's something at either or both places.
My other recent stops have included a few shows with John Judd and friends at various jams and at Giacomo
Jacks in Amity. Judd had his posse (Wall Street Jumpers) which includes Charlie Craig, Tommy Pizza and Ponytail Mike
on vocals and this time Bruce Dickson on drums and vocals. Judd and the Jumpers are a good show and when he's inspired his
licks take some creative turns offering some of the best guitar moments you'll find around here.
Another recent discovery is a new jam at Declan Quinns on Sunday night. Melody Rose a talented young vocalist
heads a good group of jazz and other players at the Bay Shore establishment. Last week was a fun mix including Giovanni Von
Essen and Bob Leto (drums). This week will include Ian Petillo, Al Cardillo and Bob Lepley!
The Great South Bay Festival came and went and I was quite disturbed at not being able to make it this year.
The schedule was filled with some great names including Hot Tuna and pretty much all my friends went and stayed the whole
weekend. All came back with stories of great times and great music like David Bromberg being joined by Jorma K.
I had planned on Saturday attendance with family functions Friday and Sunday. Well Saturday didn't
happen for numerous reasons so I got skunked. From all reports it was a huge success and you have to hand it to Mr. Faith.
He has that thing going well in a few short years.
This weekend (July 24) offers a show at Bobbique's in Patchogue to support Mario Stoiano, accomplished blues
drummer.
Musicians often don't have the benefits of medical and other insurances and Mr. Mario has some serious health
issues. His many national and local friends and cohorts are putting on a blockbuster show and the cast will be great as will
be the collaboration of dozens of those players. Check it out at Bobbique's this Sunday.
Thanks for checking in people and thanks for keeping me posted so I can keep you posted.
I post a lot of jams and regular shows on the calendar that I don't always get to in time. Eventually I
get to everything but sometimes they don't last and I miss the opportunities. Some are far away and on weeknights it isn't
easy to go south shore suffolk to north shore nassau... if I get out at all. In recent weeks I got to attend some
of those shows.
I made my first trip to Sip City in Great Neck for Ian Petillo's jam. It was a smaller room than I expected
but beautiful with a nice group of patrons and some cool jazz players. The cast included John Ray on bass, Ian on percussion and
others including vocals and horn but the cast revolves some with Al Cardillo on occasion (this week in fact).
Since we were on the north shore and the night was young we decided to run over to Eleanor Ribgy's in Mineola
for Jim Treutlein, Joe Perricone, Deb Novak and Co. who host a jam on Wednesday nights also. It was mostly acoustic and
good. Perricone delivered some heartfelt Van Morrison and everyone there was good in a small sampling. We got there at the
end..
I'm glad I caught those two talented groups of players. It was a night of quality entertainment. You can
get it on both south and north shores apparently.
I had a rare Thursday recently as well and I headed to Wickers for Al Cardillo and Perrita and
Co for another jam. That's another good one with a full roster of jazzy and other style vocalists and good players which included
Dan Policar guest playing on keys. Al Cardillo and Perrita always satisfy so it was a good show. For weeknights
those were all great shows.
Friday night I stopped in at Molly Malone's in Bay Shore for some happy hour with Sweaty Betty and
Co. It was so muggy the walls were sweating but the place was packed, the music was hot and Diane McArdle, Adam Tese and the
Sweaty Betty Band were giving a hot crowd a hot show. The packed house was loving it and I enjoyed a little
winding down time.
As for Saturday night I celebrated Chrissie O'Dells birthday with a bash at The Viking in Islip. Holy crap
that was a good show!
One Hot Mess included Craig Costa on bass, Papa John on drums, filling in for John Bendy on guitar
was Bill Marino, Mighty Bill Quinn on keys and Chrissie had Nancy Bahnsen up for some really nice harmonies.
Other guests for the occasion included Al Quinn (brother of Billy and he kicked ass on keys), John Haseth
with some smokin guitar, Johnny Cola on some stylin hot amp guitar, Carlos DeJesus with some nice bluesy guitar and
and some other nice guitar guys, John Vop and Jimmy Goldstein.
Chrissie's vocals were full throttle, the band real tight and as usual they delivered the unforgettable
original material from her amazing original cd If I Had a Dime.
It was a good week or two. There's more to come. Check out the schedule and get yourself
some live music this week.
I'll make changes to this site on a regular basis, sharing news, views, experiences, photos...whatever occurs to me.
Check back often!
